Job description

Drew University is seeking a Biology Operations Manager in the Biology Department. This is a full-time, 12-month, nonexempt position responsible for overseeing biology laboratory and stockroom operations. The role also includes, but is not limited to, laboratory set up, purchasing, budget management, chemical inventory, animal room and greenhouse monitoring and maintenance, chemical safety, compliance, and supervision of student assistants.

Job Responsibilities

  • Laboratory Setup and Support:
    Prepare laboratories by making media and reagents; moving and setting up equipment; distributing supplies; preparing the cell culture room; maintaining organisms for study; operating the autoclave; and arranging transportation for field trips.
  • Purchasing and Budget Management:
    Monitor stockroom inventory; research and place orders; schedule routine equipment maintenance and repairs; and manage departmental budgets.
  • Animal Room Monitoring and Maintenance:
    Maintain clean and functional animal facilities, including setting up clean cages, ensuring adequate food and water supplies, maintaining inventory of food and bedding, and ordering items as needed.
  • Greenhouse Monitoring and Maintenance:
    Ensure plants are properly watered and monitored and identify signs of plant stress or health issues.
  • Chemical Safety and Compliance:
    Maintain chemical safety records, ensure compliance with chemical waste disposal regulations, and coordinate chemical safety training for student employees and research assistants.
  • Student Supervision:
    Hire, supervise, and manage student assistants working in the stockroom, including oversight of duties such as glassware washing, laboratory cleanup, preparation of reagent aliquots, stocking supplies, watering plants, and cleaning and setting up animal cages.
  • Teaching Assistant Oversight:
    Manage all teaching assistants, including clearance through student employment and ensuring timesheets are completed accurately and approved in a timely manner.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in biology or a related life science field required
  • Prior experience working in a biological laboratory setting and with budget management preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to physically move and set up laboratory equipment.
