Doulas often work with families from various cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, which can present challenges such as differing expectations around childbirth, communication barriers, or varying levels of support from healthcare providers. These competencies are crucial for building trust with clients and empowering families through the childbirth experience.

Doulas are usually paid per birth or per hour, depending on the type of service and location. In the United States, birth doulas typically charge between $800 and $2,500 per birth, while postpartum doulas may earn $25 to $50 per hour. Factors such as experience, certification, geographic area, and the range of services offered can affect rates. Some doulas may also offer sliding scales or payment plans to accommodate clients’ needs.
