To thrive as a DOT Officer, you need a solid understanding of transportation regulations, safety compliance, and investigative procedures, often supported by a relevant degree or law enforcement background. Familiarity with inspection tools, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and regulatory databases like FMCSA systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and integrity help DOT Officers effectively enforce laws and interact with drivers and companies. These skills ensure road safety, regulatory compliance, and the fair application of transportation laws.

What are DOT Officers and what do they do?

DOT Officers, or Department of Transportation Officers, are law enforcement officials responsible for ensuring that commercial vehicles comply with transportation regulations. Their duties include inspecting vehicles, checking driver credentials, enforcing safety standards, and ensuring that trucks and buses meet federal and state laws. They play a crucial role in maintaining road safety and preventing accidents caused by unsafe vehicles or unqualified drivers.

How does a DOT Officer typically collaborate with other departments and agencies to ensure compliance and safety?

As a DOT Officer, collaboration with internal departments such as safety, operations, and human resources, as well as external agencies like the Department of Transportation and law enforcement, is a routine part of the job. DOT Officers often coordinate inspections, share compliance updates, and participate in joint safety audits or training sessions. This cross-functional teamwork ensures that transportation regulations are consistently followed and that any issues are quickly addressed. Building strong communication skills and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of regulations are essential for effective collaboration in this role.

Director of Safety

Job description

About Bulk Environmental & Industrial

Bulk Environmental & Industrial is a fast-growing leader in professional transportation and logistics services, providing long-haul transportation, collection, and loading of waste and other materials across a multi-site field operation. As a trucking company operating across a multi-site field network, safety is not a support function here โ€” it is a core part of how we run the business, and we are looking for a leader who can build it that way.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Director of Safety to own our safety strategy, systems, compliance, and culture โ€” and to transform how we deliver it. This is a builderโ€™s role. We have a safety team in place, and we are looking for a leader who will honestly assess the current model and redesign it around a stronger, technology-enabled approach that puts day-to-day safety accountability where it belongs: with our operations leaders and field teams.

The right person for this role is practical, disciplined, and credible - someone who can simplify processes, set clear expectations, and build a culture of safety without creating bureaucracy. You will coach and develop operations managers to own safety performance in their areas, rather than trying to own all the coaching yourself.

What You Will Drive

  • Own safety strategy, regulatory compliance (DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA), and safety culture across the organization; partner with the claims department to provide safety data, investigation findings, and documentation support
  • Assess the current safety function honestly and recommend a stronger, more effective model aligned with technology-enabled execution
  • Build and maintain a tech-forward safety program โ€” leveraging telematics, dashcams, driver scoring, and data analytics to identify and mitigate risk proactively
  • Coach and develop operations managers to own safety performance in their markets โ€” shifting the model from centralized inspection to distributed accountability
  • Lead driver safety training, accident prevention programs, and manager accountability frameworks
  • Conduct accident and injury investigations and drive corrective action through operations
  • Conduct FMCSA mock audits and maintain daily monitoring of SMS scores and the FMCSA portal
  • Leverage data to identify at-risk behavior trends and drive targeted, timely interventions
  • Manage and develop the safety team, setting clear roles, expectations, and performance standards

What We Are Looking For

  • Deep experience in trucking operations and transportation safety โ€” hands-on knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA compliance is required; experience in waste, environmental services, or other industrial field-based operations is a meaningful plus
  • A proven builder, not just a manager โ€” you have transformed or built a safety function, not just run a large existing team
  • Technology-forward approach to safety โ€” you know how to build a program around telematics, data, and driver scoring rather than relying primarily on field inspectors
  • Credible with drivers and field staff โ€” you earn respect on the yard, not just in the boardroom
  • Skilled at coaching operations leaders to own safety outcomes in their areas โ€” you build capability in others rather than centralizing everything yourself
  • Practical and disciplined โ€” you simplify, set clear standards, and drive consistent execution without adding unnecessary process
  • In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA requirements, OSHA standards, and SMS scoring
  • Strong analytical skills with experience using data to drive safety outcomes
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Spanish
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Transportation, Safety Management, or related field preferred; 10+ years of relevant experience required
  • Previous CDL experience and/or former DOT officer experience is a strong plus

Why Join Us

  • A genuine opportunity to transform a safety function โ€” with the mandate and leadership support to do it right
  • High-visibility role reporting to the COO with direct influence on how we operate across every site and market
  • A company that takes safety seriously as a business priority, not just a compliance obligation
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience
