Radiation Therapist

Be part of a team whose mission is to deliver empathic and exceptional care to patients and their families every day at the Henry Ford Cancer Institute (HFCI).

There is opportunity to share this contingent role with other radonc sites: West Bloomfield and Detroit as needed. We will also accept applications for radiation therapy students with pending graduation in April or May of 2022.

Join us for the opportunity to work in the brand new, patient-centered HFCI-Detroit Cancer Pavilion with a team that takes care of the patient, and takes care of one another, no matter what.

General Summary:

Under general supervision administers radiation treatments to patients, as prescribed by the physician, utilizing specialized equipment including linear accelerator, High Dose Rate (HDR) After loader, and Computed Tomography.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Reviews patient prescriptions to ascertain type of treatment required, location of affected areas, history of previous radiation treatment, etc.
  • Safely positions patients utilizing immobilization devices.
  • Utilizes appropriate treatment accessories as prescribed by the physician.
  • Operates treatment machine (linear accelerator, HDR) precisely.
  • Administers ionizing radiation as prescribed per physician.
  • Verifies radiation prescription prior to treatment and confirms total radiation dose following treatment in patient charts.
  • Documents treatment in inpatient charts.
  • Localizes patient markings daily.
  • Completes on-going imaging of patients per departmental policy.
  • Assists patients in coordinating appointment time for daily treatments, accommodating patient transportation, and other appointments.
  • Refers patients to social worker for counseling, transportation and medical equipment needs, etc. as appropriate.
  • Refers patients to nurse or physician for conditions requiring evaluation, as appropriate.
  • Assumes the duties of simulation.
  • Rotates through treatment areas as assigned.
  • Responsible for cleaning therapy rooms and work area; maintains linen and medical supplies for treatment rooms.
  • Adheres to the quality assurance policies of the department (chart checks, timeouts, machine warm-up, etc.).
  • Teaches radiation therapy students as defined by their educational requirements.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or requested.

Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.

Certifications/Licensures Required:

  • A.R.R.T. Radiation Therapy Technology Certification or registry eligible
