Job Description
Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professor in the area of AI & Network and Communications Security to begin in Fall 2026. The position is in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) with a joint appointment with the School of Cybersecurity. This is a tenure-track appointment that is part of a multiple-position hiring initiative for Trustworthy AI. This cluster hire is part of ODU's Centennial Cluster Initiative which supports the expansion of transdisciplinary research efforts by prioritizing the hiring of multiple faculty positions targeting specific research areas. The Trustworthy AI cluster hire involves interdisciplinary collaboration among School of Cybersecurity, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice, and builds on existing interdisciplinary strengths at ODU.
We are seeking applicants with expertise at the intersection of advanced trustworthy AI techniques and their integration into networks and communications systems. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, AI and computer network security, AI-driven security analysis on networked systems, AI-based threat intelligence, security issues in networked AI-as-a-service systems, security of AI-enabled cyber-physical systems, security of next generation networks such as satellite communication, space systems, and quantum communication, emergent security issues in networked cyber-physical systems, cyber operations.
Requirements for this position are the potential for success in teaching, research, and obtaining external research grants. The position carries a teaching load of 4 courses/year with a reduced course load during the first two years. The Assistant/Associate Professor will also actively pursue external research grants, supervise Ph.D. students, and participate in interdisciplinary research collaborations with other researchers at ODU. Undergraduate research supervision is highly recommended.

  2. Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate clearly with internal and external constituencies.

  2. Ability to work in multidisciplinary settings.
  3. A strong research record at the intersection of AI and Network and Communications Cybersecurity, demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications in reputed conferences and journals.

Preferred Qualifications
Candidates for the Associate Professor position :
  • An academic record that merits a tenured appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Candidates for the Assistant or Associate Professor :
  • Experience in grant proposal writing.
