Job description

Incorporated in 1948, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) provides reliable, cost-effective, environmentally balanced, wholesale electric services to our 11-member distribution cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Our core business is generating, purchasing, and delivering electricity to our members. ODEC is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative that operates for the benefit of our members, who are our owners. Our home office is located in Glen Allen, Virginia. 

Purpose of Job

Energetic and innovative leader to serve as our Plant Manager at the Marsh Run Generation Facility in Remington, Virginia. This leader will be responsible for impactful people leadership, strong relationship development, safety, and environmental compliance of ODEC’s combustion turbine generation facility.  This individual develops the operations and maintenance budget, coordinates and executes outage planning, manages site personnel to achieve ODEC performance goals and recommends policies and procedures to ensure proper operation of the facility and equipment.

Essential responsibilities include:

  • Leading day-to-day activities of the plant in compliance with ODEC’s operating policies and procedures.
  • Coordinating and executing facility maintenance outages with Corporate and other service organizations in a manner to minimize negative site impacts.
  • Developing and managing capital budgets on an annual basis
  • Managing plant assets to ensure efficient operations, including the reporting and tracking of key performance indicators.
  • Developing and ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and NERC policies and procedures
  • Effectively leading 2 direct reports (Operations and Maintenance Manager and an Administrative Assistant)

Work Experience: 

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in power plant operations required
  • Minimum 3 years’ power generation direct supervisory experience required

Critical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires strong people and budget management skills
  • Effective written and oral communication skills to all levels of the organization
  • In-depth understanding of the electric utility industry
  • Ability to interact effectively and coordinate closely with multiple ODEC departments, including Power Supply, Accounting, Engineering, Information Technology, EH&S, and Human Resources, and external business partners.
  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook required

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in combustion turbine power plant operations/maintenance
  • Combustion turbine operations direct supervisory experience

Education: 

High school diploma or equivalent.  Bachelor’s degree in engineering preferred.

Travel details: Frequent monthly day trips and occasional overnight travel required in this position

 Working Conditions and Physical Demands: 

  • Hand-eye coordination to use a keyboard and monitor the majority of the day, including working on a laptop and smartphone
  • Interact effectively with others through verbal communication, video, email, and text
  • Work full days (8 hours) in a power plant facility, including an office environment, with occasional evening and weekend work
  • Frequently spend a number of hours outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions at a generation facility
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces, climb stack ladders, potentially hundreds of feet high, and walk on stack platforms
  • Ability to distinguish colors
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds
  • Occasional day and overnight travel via automobile and commercial airline required in this position as needed
