What is a dog counselor?

Dog counselors are professionals who help dog owners address behavioral issues and improve the relationship between dogs and their families. They assess the dog's environment, identify the causes of unwanted behaviors, and create customized training or behavior modification plans. Dog counselors may also offer advice on dog care, socialization, and communication techniques. Their goal is to promote the well-being of both the dog and its owner, ensuring a harmonious living situation.

How does a dog counselor typically collaborate with pet owners and veterinary professionals to support canine well-being?

Dog Counselors often work closely with pet owners to assess behavioral issues, develop customized training plans, and provide guidance on positive reinforcement techniques. Collaboration with veterinary professionals is also common, especially when addressing behaviors that may be linked to medical conditions. Effective communication and a team-oriented approach help ensure that the dog's physical and emotional needs are met, creating a supportive environment for both the pet and its owner. This collaborative dynamic is essential for achieving long-term improvements in canine behavior and well-being.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dog counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dog Counselor, you need a solid understanding of canine behavior, animal psychology, and effective training techniques, often supported by relevant coursework or certification. Familiarity with behavior assessment tools, positive reinforcement methods, and pet management software is typically required. Patience, strong observational skills, and effective communication with both dogs and owners are vital soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure the well-being of dogs, foster positive owner-pet relationships, and lead to successful behavior modification outcomes.

Job description

50% commission on all services, plus tips

We spend more time at work than with our families — so choose your work-family wisely. At The Dog Stop Plano, we handle the facility, the overhead, and the support — you focus on the dogs and building your craft.

Is this you?
You genuinely love dogs and take pride in your work, whether you're an experienced groomer building your client base or newer to the trade and ready to grow. You're detail-oriented, reliable, and comfortable talking with clients about the best cut or care option for their dog. You handle a busy schedule well and keep a clean, organized station. All experience levels welcome — we support groomers at every stage.

What you'll actually be doing

  • Full nose-to-tail grooms — bath, nail trims, and breed-appropriate cuts for all sizes and breeds
  • Walk-in nail trims and gland expressions
  • Building relationships with clients and their dogs, and recommending the right grooming plan for each
  • Managing your schedule and communicating with the front desk and clients on progress
  • Keeping your grooming station and tools clean and organized
  • Tracking inventory and maintaining client profiles

Pay structure

  • 50% commission on all services — same split for every groomer, regardless of experience level
  • Tips
  • All grooming supplies provided — no need to buy or bring your own

Schedule

  • 3–5 days per week
  • Weekend availability is a plus, not required

Benefits

  • Bring your dog to work
  • Dog adoption assistance
  • Employee discount on retail and services
  • Free/discounted services for your own dog
  • Flexible schedule
  • Referral program
  • Professional development assistance
  • Bereavement leave

Location: 910 W Parker Rd, Ste 103, Plano, TX 75075 (SE corner of Parker & Alma)

All experience levels welcome — bring your skills, your passion for dogs, and (if you have one) a portfolio of your work. Apply with your résumé and a note on why you'd be a great fit.
