Job description

Shift Hours: Monday - Friday (8:00am - 5:00pm)
Purpose of this position:
Provide Spanish language interpretation services for indigent parties appearing in county and district civil courts, for incarcerated persons during magistration following arrest, and for defendants during pre-trial court appearances in county and district criminal courts. Assist lead Master Certified Court Interpreter/Language Access Coordinator and Director of Court Administration with coordination of coverage for extended hearings and trials in civil and criminal courts, act as primary interpreter for trial cases and extended hour hearings. Provide document translation services for courts and assist courts with translation of materials for public communication, as needed.
Primary Job Duties
• Provide Spanish language interpretation services for indigent parties appearing in county and district civil courts, for incarcerated persons during magistration following arrest, and for defendants and witnesses during pre-trial and trial proceedings in county and district criminal courts.
• Simultaneous interpretation for extended hour hearings and bench trials.
• Primary interpreter for voir dire, lead interpreter of jury trial interpreter team
• Act as liaison between court and OCA Language Access Coordinator to ensure trial court interpretation needs are met
• Attendance in office during office hours
• Provide sight and written translation of English or Spanish documents as required
• Performs such other related duties as may be assigned
Education, Experience and Skill Requirements
• Must have Master Certified Spanish Language certification issued by the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission
• 1-2+ years' experience in interpretation and translation, Spanish-English and English-Spanish
• Experience in providing simultaneous interpretation in courtroom trial settings
• Maintain strict confidentiality of court proceedings
• Prior experience with courtroom procedures and knowledge of specialized legal concepts and jargon
• Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office, email, calendaring software
• Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance
• Work well with others and participate fully in a team oriented environment
After receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicant must pass a drug screen (1/2 cost = $20.00, responsibility of applicant) and may need a physical agility test (1/2 cost = $22.50, responsibility of applicant) before becoming an employee of Montgomery County.
