Job description

We are designing the grid of the future!ย 

Electric Power Engineers (EPE) is seeking an experienced Distribution Designer / Engineer to support CenterPoint Energyโ€™s overhead distribution system improvement projects across the Houston area.

This temporary position will focus on reconductoring, overhead line relocations, and related field design activities, combining both field data collection and office-based design work. Ideal candidates have strong technical proficiency in DDS (Distribution Design Studio), experience with CenterPoint Energy standards, and the ability to perform accurate, efficient field assessments using tools like the IKE device.


Howย you can make an impact:

  • Perform field design and data collection for overhead distribution projects, including reconductoring, relocations, and new line extensions.
  • Use DDS to create and update detailed design models that comply with CenterPoint Energyโ€™s design standards.
  • Conduct on-site pole audits and field verification using IKE devices or IKE Office, recording pole measurements, attachments, clearances, and environmental details.
  • Identify and document underground utilities through coordination with locators and interpretation of existing as-builts and GIS data.
  • Apply NESC and CenterPoint Energy construction standards to ensure all designs meet clearance, loading, and safety requirements.
  • Prepare construction-ready design packages, including drawings, material lists, and design notes.
  • Support QA reviews and respond to field/design discrepancies in coordination with EPEโ€™s design management team.
  • Maintain accurate field logs and submit updates regularly through approved project management systems.

Bring your passion, here's whatโ€™s needed:

Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in electric distribution design (reconductoring, relocations, new line extensions, or pole replacements).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with DDS (Distribution Design Studio).
  • Familiarity with CenterPoint Energy design and construction standards.
  • Strong understanding of NESC requirements and overhead line design principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret as-built drawings, GIS maps, and field survey data.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Valid Texas driverโ€™s license and willingness to perform field work throughout the Houston region.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working directly on CenterPoint Energy projects or systems.
  • AutoCAD drafting capabilities for overhead distribution or related designs.
  • Familiarity with IKE Field or IKE Office software for field data collection.
  • Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity and innovation under experience (bring your passion section.ย 

Work Environment

  • Field and office-based hybrid role in the Greater Houston area.
  • Standard schedule: Mondayโ€“Friday, 40 hours/week; overtime may be required based on project deadlines.
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions and terrain.

Compensation & Duration

  • Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience.
  • Temporary contract position (estimated 1 year, with potential for extension, or direct onboarding possible).
