Job description

Job Summary:

Provides support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the due diligence, investigation, alteration, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale transmission and communication line projects in the public and private sector. Tasks may include assistance with the research, design, planning, concept development, construction, and upgrading of overhead/underground high voltage transmission line projects, power distribution/transmission substations, fiber-optic, line extensions, power regulation, renewable energy, major additions, as well as protection and control systems in a wide variety of linear contexts. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned material, plans, installations, and construction specifications.

Job Duties:

  • Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, controllability, safety, reliability, and functionality of transmission assets.
  • With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data and drawings relating to engineering services for high voltage power transmission and distribution, existing and new build transmission structures, substation and switch station components, equipment specifications for procurement package development and pricing, transmission asset design, electric utility construction design and review processes, and Rural Utility Service (RUS)/IEEE/NESC standards and regulations.
  • Perform basic professional transmission engineering work relating to the design and development of grid and structure details, to include specifying all parts, hardware, insulators, lightning protection, and grounding details for different pole materials, such as steel, round wood, or laminated wood in conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Provides technical engineering assistance on various design requirements, equipment sizing and cabling, panel design, substations, and environmentally acceptable conduit/trenching/overhead strategies to ensure the safety, reliability, efficiency, and functionality of systems and infrastructure.
  • Support senior transmission engineers with research, detail engineering and support of transmission line projects (generally 69,000 volts to 500,000 volts) from conceptual design through construction.
  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical assistance with preliminary line routing and site selection, coordinating and assessing the impacts of line routes, station sites, real estate, licensing, construction, and environmental constraints on the overall engineering process.
  • Under minimal supervision, perform basic calculations for electrical loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, sag/tension, grounding, lighting circuits and controls, facility and electrical service, power distribution, and materials. Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis transmission matters such as line relocations, distribution substation capacity increases, operations support, transmission transformer or conductor replacements and reliability upgrades.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work, including project controls, construction, procurement, document control, and environmental and permitting teams.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and technical staff to perform electrical computer simulation models of transmission lines and substations, as well as technical power flow and transient stability simulation analysis to meet all NERC, WECC, and FERC compliance requirements.
  • Assist with conducting studies to ensure the reliability of transmission systems, including power flow analysis, stability studies, voltage studies, technical analysis of disturbances and implementation of regulatory reliability standards.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, equipment delivery, and construction schedules and specifications.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and adhere to professional conduct and KLJ’s policies and procedures.
  • Ability to recognize hazards in the workplace and take appropriate action.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Structural Engineering, or related field.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience in a transmission engineering capacity.
  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE) Understanding of transmission engineering as applied in design engineering of large capital projects, overhead/underground high voltage and extra high voltage transmission lines including route selection, line and structure spotting, structure design and analysis, and development of construction bid packages.
  • Highly familiar with NESC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE, RUS Bulletins, GO-95, relevant environmental and power transmission construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • High familiarity with transmission engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, power line and structure modeling, geotechnical data interpretation for foundation/structure design, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools. High familiarity with discipline-specific design software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical work week.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and adhere to professional conduct and KLJ’s policies and procedures.
  • Due to occasional travel a valid driver’s license is required.

    The employee must:
