How much do distance credentialed counselor jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for distance credentialed counselor in the United States is $62,532.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $48,000.00 and $69,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Distance Credentialed Counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Distance Credentialed Counselor, you need a strong background in counseling, an appropriate degree, licensure, and the Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC) certification. Familiarity with secure telehealth platforms, electronic health records, and confidentiality protocols is essential. Excellent communication, empathy, and self-motivation help build trust and rapport with clients in a virtual environment. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering effective, ethical, and accessible mental health support remotely.

What is the difference between Distance Credentialed Counselor vs Licensed Professional Counselor?

CriteriaDistance Credentialed CounselorLicensed Professional Counselor
CredentialsRequires specific certification or credentialing for remote work, often a state-approved credentialRequires state licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC or equivalent)
Work EnvironmentPrimarily telehealth or remote settings, often with online platformsIn-person, telehealth, or hybrid settings in clinical environments
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by telehealth providers, online counseling services, and remote mental health organizationsUsed by clinics, private practices, hospitals, and community agencies

Distance Credentialed Counselors and Licensed Professional Counselors both provide mental health services, but the former specializes in remote, online delivery often requiring specific credentials for telehealth. Licensed Professional Counselors typically hold state licensure and may work in various settings, including in-person and hybrid environments. Understanding these differences helps clients and job seekers identify the right role based on credentials and work environment preferences.

What are Distance Credentialed Counselors?

Distance Credentialed Counselors (DCCs) are licensed mental health professionals who have obtained specialized training and certification to provide counseling services through telehealth methods such as phone, video conferencing, or online platforms. The DCC credential ensures that counselors understand the unique ethical, legal, and technological considerations involved in delivering counseling remotely. This designation is recognized as a way to maintain high standards of care and confidentiality in distance counseling. DCCs help make mental health services more accessible to individuals who may not be able to attend in-person sessions due to location, mobility, or other constraints.

What are some common challenges Distance Credentialed Counselors face when working with clients remotely?

Distance Credentialed Counselors often encounter challenges related to building rapport and trust with clients in a virtual environment. Technical issues, such as connectivity problems or software glitches, can disrupt sessions and require quick troubleshooting. Additionally, maintaining client confidentiality and privacy can be more complex when working remotely, making it essential to use secure platforms and follow best practices for data protection. Counselors must also be proactive in recognizing and addressing signs of client disengagement, which can be harder to detect without in-person cues.
