Sr. Director, Research Informatics & Software Engineering

Location: Greater New York City Area (Onsite)

We are partnering with an innovative biotechnology company to identify a Sr. Director of Research Informatics & Software Engineering. This leader will own the strategy, architecture, and execution of the organization's research informatics ecosystem, enabling scientists, software engineers, and AI/ML teams to leverage high-quality scientific data across the drug discovery process.

This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for building AI-ready data infrastructure, overseeing research informatics platforms, and driving the integration of laboratory systems, software engineering, and machine learning initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Research Informatics & Software Engineering organization.
  • Oversee scientific data platforms, LIMS, ELNs, laboratory software, and system integrations.
  • Develop and execute an enterprise strategy for AI-ready scientific data, governance, and data architecture.
  • Partner with Biology, Chemistry, Automation, Data Science, and AI/ML teams to ensure scientific data is structured, accessible, and optimized for machine learning workflows.
  • Drive software development and informatics initiatives supporting laboratory operations and research.
  • Build, mentor, and scale a high-performing informatics and software engineering team.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies that improve research productivity and scientific data management.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience leading Research Informatics, Scientific Informatics, Cheminformatics, or Scientific Software Engineering within biotechnology or pharmaceutical organizations.
  • Experience managing LIMS, ELNs, scientific data platforms, and laboratory software ecosystems.
  • Strong understanding of AI-ready data strategies, data governance, and AI/ML workflows.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML Ops and the role of scientific data in enabling machine learning applications.
  • Experience partnering across scientific, engineering, and data science organizations.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Experience
  • Drug discovery or life sciences R&D.
  • Cloud-based data platforms and modern software architecture.
  • Laboratory automation and scientific instrument integrations.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams through organizational growth and technology transformation.

Candidates should have experience with many of the following technologies and platforms:

  • Scientific Informatics Platforms (CDD Vault, Virscidian, Benchling or similar)
  • LIMS, ELNs, Registration & Inventory Management Systems
  • Scientific Data Platforms and AI-Ready Data Infrastructure
  • Laboratory Automation & Orchestration Platforms
  • Python, SQL, and REST APIs
  • Scientific Data Engineering, Data Pipelines, and Metadata Management
  • AI/ML Ops and Machine Learning Data Workflows
  • Data Visualization & Workflow Tools (KNIME, Spotfire, Pipeline Pilot)
