What is a Discord Developer (Remote)?

A Discord Developer (Remote) is a software developer who specializes in creating, maintaining, and optimizing bots, integrations, and custom features for the Discord platform, while working from a remote location. They typically use programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or TypeScript and work with the Discord API to build tools that enhance server management or user engagement. Remote Discord Developers collaborate with clients or teams online, using communication tools to coordinate and deliver projects efficiently. This role requires both strong technical skills and a good understanding of Discord's ecosystem.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Discord Developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Discord Developers often face challenges such as coordinating across time zones, managing asynchronous communication, and ensuring smooth collaboration with other team members like designers and community managers. To overcome these issues, it's important to establish clear communication channels, utilize project management tools, and schedule regular check-ins for team alignment. Additionally, documenting code thoroughly and maintaining an organized workflow can help the team stay on track and manage updates or bug fixes efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Discord Developer (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Discord Developer (Remote), you need strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, familiarity with Discord's API, and experience building bots or integrations, often supported by a background in software development or computer science. Knowledge of frameworks like discord.js, version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud deployment platforms is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear remote communication skills help developers excel in distributed teams. These skills ensure the creation of robust, scalable Discord solutions that meet user needs and function reliably in a remote work environment.

Relay is building the web3 messenger. We are looking for talented and motivated front-end engineers of all experience levels. Relay engineers thrive in a high-growth, high-velocity environment where success depends on the highest levels of communication, code quality, and pragmatism. Each engineer must be able to individually own a slice of the Relay codebase while also maintaining a working knowledge of others. Accordingly, Relay is looking for team members who are not only highly-skilled individual contributors but also strong collaborators and communicators.
Technical Responsibilities
  • Facilitate technical growth for all members of the development team
  • Develop, shape, and maintain technical processes and workflows
  • "Set the tone" in terms of craftsmanship standards and code quality
  • Carefully implement critical UI components, shared functionality, and certain subsystems (like monitoring, testing, validation, etc)
  • Rapidly implement functional UI elements from design mocks and workflow diagrams, with an eye toward correctness and readability.
  • Active/thoughtful participation in discussions surrounding ticket specification, design review, etc.
  • Participate in active, intentional, and thorough code reviews.

Lead Responsibilities
  • Actively participate in GitHub discussions, issues, and pull requests
  • Provide technical support and guidance in both GitHub and Discord
  • Participate in growing the development team

Requirements
  • 5+ years building production, customer-facing React applications.
  • 7+ years of experience building production, customer-facing frontend applications (using React or any other frontend toolchain).
  • 1 year of TypeScript experience
  • Minimum 3 years working with any strongly typed programming language
  • Minimum 1 year leading or 2 years contributing to a web3-centric project
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Very strong understanding of idiomatic UI implementation patterns
  • Deep understanding of JavaScript and TypeScript
  • Strong understanding of the browser programming environment (the DOM, data-fetching APIs, storage APIs, sessions, HTTP, caching, etc).
  • Working understanding of public key cryptography (encrypting, signing, etc) and associated user flows
  • Desire to work in a semi-public-facing role as an OSS maintainer

Relay's benefits include unlimited and encouraged time off, 100% company-paid medical, dental, & vision for you and your dependents, 2-3x/week company lunches at local restaurants, and for remote employees: up to $2,000 USD home office setup stipend (all benefits are subject to applicable taxes and based on eligibility).
