Job description
Position Title: High School Assistant Principal FLSA Status: Exempt
Responsible to: Building Principal Supervises: Students
Evaluated by: Building Principal in accordance to Board Policy Terms of Employment: 225 days
Evaluation Period:
- Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per MCS Performance and Assessment procedure
- Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1
Purpose of the Position: Assist in overall building supervision, test coordination, school improvement committee, teacher evaluation, master schedule, and teacher walk through observations and discipline
Classified as Confidential Employee: Functional responsibilities or knowledge in connection with the issues involved in dealings between the school corporation and its employees require strict adherence to confidentiality.
Minimum Requirements: The following qualifications represent the minimum requirements necessary for an individual to perform this position effectively.
- Certification for secondary school administration and supervision
- Proven ability to provide leadership at the high school level
- Knowledge and skill in the application of all statutes, rules, regulations, case law, and school corporation policies affecting the enrollment, attendance, and supervision of Marion High School
Essential Functions of the Position: The following functions have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.
- Serve as principal when the principal is absent from the building.
- Assist the principal in the overall administration of the school.
- Assist the principal in providing in-service training for the staff.
- Assist with teacher/staff evaluation as directed by the principal.
- Assist the principal in overseeing the processes leading to curriculum revision.
- Assist the principal with supervision of students, including athletic and social events as assigned by the principal and during lunchroom, arrival, and dismissal.
- Represent the administration during conferences with counselors, pupils, parents, and teachers.
- Represent the administration in 504 and special education conferences.
- Meet with relevant staff members to provide assistance regarding student-related concerns (discipline, academic, attendance).
- Contact Child Protective Services (Welfare), Grant County Juvenile, and Grant County law enforcement when appropriate.
- Assist the principal in conducting orientation and parent open forums.
- Assist the principal in planning and conducting the Parent Open House and Parent Teacher Conferences.
- Assist the principal in acclimating student teachers and interns to the building.
- Assist in the preparation of teacher handbooks.
- Assist the athletic department on special projects as needed.
- Assist with the disaster plans and completing disaster reports.
- Coordinate teacher supervisory and teacher assistant daily assignment schedules.
- Attend the high school academic meetings.
- Attend MPO meetings when appropriate.
Secondary Functions of the Position: The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.
- Assist support staff as needed (i.e. custodian, nurse, secretary, etc.).
- Supervise extracurricular activities.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
Knowledge of:
- Policies, procedures and functions of student management practices
- Applicable software and applications
- Teaching methodologies to provide assistance to teachers requiring instructional assistance at the high school level
Ability to:
- Use the school corporation secondary teacher evaluation system, including observation, report preparation, and conferences.
- Plan, organize, and schedule priorities.
- Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.
- Discreetly handle confidential and politically sensitive matters.
- Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Tactfully and courteously respond to requests and inquiries/complaints from the general public and staff.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.

Physical Demands:
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
