How much do disability examiner jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for disability examiner in Arizona is $76,054.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $46,100.00 and $122,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a disability examiner?

Disability Examiners are professionals who evaluate medical and vocational evidence to determine if individuals qualify for disability benefits under government programs such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). They review medical records, consult with healthcare providers, and apply regulatory guidelines to assess eligibility. Their role is crucial in ensuring that only those who meet the established criteria receive benefits, and they often work closely with medical consultants and case workers during the review process.

What does a disability examiner do?

A disability examiner oversees the processing of social security and SSI disability claims. As a disability examiner, your responsibilities include examining medical records and other relevant documents and assessing the application to determine if the claim is valid. You also must contact medical care providers to obtain records on the claimant’s behalf. Your job is to thoroughly examine each application and fairly assess whether or not the Social Security office should pay out the benefits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a disability examiner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Disability Examiner, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, case evaluation, and regulatory guidelines, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in a health or social science field. Familiarity with case management systems, electronic records, and relevant federal or state disability determination tools is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in making fair decisions and clearly documenting findings. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate, timely, and legally compliant disability benefit determinations.

How does a disability examiner typically collaborate with medical professionals during the claims review process?

Disability Examiners regularly communicate with physicians, psychologists, and other healthcare providers to request additional medical evidence, clarify complex medical information, and ensure all necessary documentation is obtained for a fair determination. This collaboration is essential for evaluating claimants' eligibility based on medical criteria and functional limitations. Examiners must be skilled at interpreting medical reports and building professional relationships to facilitate timely and accurate decisions. Effective teamwork with medical consultants is a key part of the role and contributes to both case accuracy and workflow efficiency.
