Job Summary

Provides strategic and operational leadership for UMMS corporate development activities, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, affiliations, and strategic partnerships that advance the financial, operational, and strategic objectives of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and its Member Organizations.

Primary Responsibilities

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.

  • Leads the evaluation, structuring, and execution support of M&A transactions and strategic partnership opportunities, including identification of targets and partners, development of strategic rationale, and alignment with system priorities. Oversees market and partner due diligence, including financial, operational, strategic, and regulatory assessments, to support informed decision-making by executive leadership.
  • Manages the ongoing governance, performance monitoring, and relationship support for existing corporate and strategic partners, ensuring partnerships continue to deliver intended value and remain aligned with UMMS strategic, financial, and operational objectives.
  • Directs the development of business cases, valuation analyses, and financial models to evaluate transaction and partnership opportunities.
  • Leads analysis related to deal economics, synergies, risks, and value creation, in collaboration with finance and operational leaders.
  • Leads negotiations of key business terms with potential partners and transaction counterparties, working closely with internal stakeholders and legal counsel on deal structure, contractual terms and conditions, and risk mitigation strategies. Demonstrates a strong understanding of regulatory considerations, including antitrust, governance, and healthcare-specific regulatory requirements, and incorporates regulatory implications into transaction planning and execution.
  • Works collaboratively with executive leadership, service line leaders, finance, legal, and external advisors to support transaction execution planning, integration readiness, and post-transaction performance monitoring.
  • Supports alignment across clinical, operational, and corporate stakeholders to enable effective implementation of approved transactions and partnerships.
  • Prepares and presents executive-level and Board-facing materials, including transaction summaries, diligence findings, financial analyses, and recommendations, for review by UMMS senior leadership and other governance bodies as appropriate.
  • Participates as a senior leader in system-level strategy and development forums, partnering closely with Strategy & Business Development leadership to ensure coordination between enterprise strategy, business development, and corporate development activities.
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and oversight to directors, senior associates, associates, and analysts supporting corporate development activities, ensuring disciplined execution, analytic rigor, and professional development within the team.
  • ย Perform all other duties as assigned.

Work Experience

Education & Experience - Required

ย ย ย ย ย ย Master's degree in Health Care Administration, Business, or a related discipline.

ย ย ย ย ย ย At least seven (7) years of experience in strategy, corporate development, finance, business development, or operations within a healthcare setting.

ย ย ย ย ย ย A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory or leadership experience is required.

ย ย ย ย ย ย Demonstrated ability to collaborate and negotiate with cross-functional teams, and to support projects of varying scope through diverse methodologies and environments.
