Job description

Job Objective:

The Sterile Processing Department's operations involve collection,decontamination, processing, sterilization,high-level disinfection,storageand distribution of instrumentation that support Perioperative Services departments and other clinical departments throughout the organization.Under the general direction of the Director ofSurgical Servicesor designeetheSterileProcessing Manager must becapable of workingindependently inthe decontamination and sterile processing areas, upholding all specialty body and regulatory standards, and supporting the education, development,and mentoring of personnel in the sterile processing department.This position will have frequent interaction withPurchasingDepartmentBuyers, but will not have a direct reporting relationship.

EssentialDutiesandResponsibilities:

1.The Sterile Processing Manager is responsible forassessing,identifying, planning, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and supervising operations, quality, and efficiency of personnel and department services.

2.Maintains continued education and proficiencyin the field of sterile processing operations and equipment through education,literatureand seminars.

3.Thisposition provides leadership forthe department's overall operations, including:

  • Develops and ensures compliance withannualdepartmental operating budget.

  • Demonstrates24-hour accountability of general unit activities and functions.

  • Quality,Policy, and Regulatory Requirements

  • Develop policies and procedures forSterileProcessing Department.

  • Ensures adherence to departmental policies/procedures/ regulatoryrequirements.

  • Developsstandards of care, quality of work and best practicesfordepartment.

  • Ensures departmental standards of operation and policiesare in compliance withregulatory agencies including but not limited to CMS, TJC, AAMI, AORN, APIC, CDPH, OSHA, etc.

    • Acts as a resource for others within the department and in other departments in relation to decontamination, processing, sterilization, and high-level disinfection.Demonstrates correct departmental processes and procedures to personnel.

    • Ensuresoptimalsterile processing performance through quality control and quality assurance of all Sterile Processing activities and equipment.

    • Recommends equipment changes,upgradesand additions to meet manufacturer instructions for use (IFU) for all items processed.

    • Ensures personnel perform workwithin prescribed technical and safety standards.

    • Ensures that all sterilization records areaccurate, current, and compliant with regulatory requirements.

    • Participates in department and hospital Performance Improvement activities asrequired.

    • Representsdepartment/Surgical Services by attendingappropriate departmentaland facility meetings (as requested), such as infection prevention, environment of care, etc.

    • Collaborates with supporting departments such as infection prevention, biomed, engineering and plant services, environmental services, and others as needed to ensure quality within department.

    A. Operations

    • Ensures effective management of human,fiscaland physical plant resources.

    • Seeks opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operational processes and productivity.

    • Supervises personnel asappropriate toachieve established operational performance and quality goals.

    • Manages collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization,distributionand inventory of instrumentation.

    • Monitors andreportsequipment operational status.

    • Control the purchasing of supplies for the Sterile Processing Department.

    • Manages vendor and courier services aspertaining totheir effect on sterile processing and adherence to organizational policy and procedures.

      • Responsible for ensuring appropriateshiftand terminal cleaning for departmental areas.

      B. Customer Service/ Teamwork

      • Modelsexcellence in customer service, ensuring the highest standards for both internal and external constituent satisfaction and sets the expectation for employees to do the same.

      • Serves as a subject matter expert and resource for personneland others within the organization.

      • Works collaboratively with other departments to ensure safety, quality, efficiency, and ability to meet customer needs.

      • Provides ongoing and effective communication with physicians/hospital/clinic department and management,staffand vendor representatives.

      C. Personnel

      • Facilitates the recruitment andselectionof department staff.

      • Provides staff with ongoing feedback and documents appropriately including performance evaluations.

      • Develops a comprehensive departmental orientation fornew staffand ensures completion prior to independent assignment.

      • Routinely coordinates ongoing training and competency validation.

      • Provides or coordinates instructions and in-service new products,proceduresand equipment toidentifyand prevent resource loss andmaintainspatient and staff safety.

      • Ensures staff attend technical and mandatory training/education.

      • Develops and/or approvespersonnel work schedulesto ensureinstrumentand equipmentavailability.

      • Manages personnel performance, behavior, and attendanceand recommends personnel improvement actions to Executive Director Surgical Services.Initiates disciplinary process after approval by Director and/or Human Resources.

      • Supports independent functioning of SPD coordinators,assistingwithroleas needed.

      Non-Essential Duties:

      • Working knowledge ofAAMI, AORN,andallother applicableregulatory procedures.

      • Understanding of, and ability to effectively apply knowledge to:

      • departmental supply needs

      • PAR leveling

      • Reordering and supply management as it relates to ensuring adequate necessary supplies tomaintainefficient operations of the department

      • instrument maintenance and repair

      • tracking of costs and frequency of instrumentation repair and replacement

      • Ability to collect pertinent data, analyze, and develop recommendations and actions plans to justify requests for programs, equipment, supplies, and instrumentation to support effective and efficient perioperative operations

      • Working knowledge of management principles and skillsin the area ofplanning, organizing, directing, budgeting, staffing, and evaluating usuallyacquiredthrough two or more years of management experience or college level courses.

      • Thorough knowledge ofsurgicalinstrumentation.

        Education and Experience:

        Education

        • High School Diplomaor General Education Equivalentrequired

        • Completion of Sterile Processing education programrequired

        • Bachelor'sdegree or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred

        Experience

        • Five(5) years ofdemonstrated/proven working experience withinacute careSterile ProcessingDepartmentrequired

        • Sterile Processing experience in a Level 1 or 2 traumadesignatedacutecaresettinghighly preferred

        • Minimum (1) yearleadership/supervisoryexperience withinsterile processingrequired

        Threeyears'leadership/supervisory experience in Sterile Processing prefer

        Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

        • Current Sterile Processing Technician Certification (CSPDT or CRCST) from IAHCSMM

          • Certification in Leadership (Healthcare Leader) CHL,requiredwithin six months of position acceptance

          • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS), preferred

          • Certificated Endoscope Reprocess (CER), preferred
