What is a director software?

A Director of Software is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the software development teams and guiding the strategic direction of software projects within an organization. They manage engineering managers and developers, set technical vision, ensure projects are aligned with business goals, and often collaborate with other departments like product management and operations. The role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to balance innovation with operational efficiency. Directors of Software are also tasked with recruiting top talent, mentoring team members, and ensuring software quality and security standards are met.

What are some typical challenges a director of software faces when leading cross-functional teams?

A Director of Software often encounters challenges such as aligning priorities across engineering, product, and design teams, ensuring clear communication, and managing competing deadlines. Balancing technical debt reduction with new feature development is also a common concern. Successful Directors build strong relationships with stakeholders, foster a culture of collaboration, and implement processes that support transparency and efficient decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of software, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Software, you need extensive experience in software development, strong leadership abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as project management software (e.g., Jira), cloud platforms, and agile methodologies, as well as certifications like PMP or Scrum Master, is highly beneficial. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and team management skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for guiding teams, delivering high-quality products, and aligning software initiatives with organizational goals.

Job description

As a Director of Developer Experience, you will be tasked with leading the organization responsible for how every engineer at the company builds, tests, ships, and operates software. You will own two interconnected functions: Infrastructure Services (CI/CD orchestration, GitOps continuous delivery, artifact management, and related platforms) and Developer Tooling (the teams that design and operate our CI/CD pipelines and internal developer platform). Critically, you will also define and execute our strategy for integrating AI across the software development lifecycle, from AI-assisted code generation and review to AI-driven engineering intelligence platforms.

Developer experience is one of the highest-leverage investments an engineering organization can make, and AI is the largest shift in how software is built in a generation. The Director of Developer Experience will directly shape how hundreds of engineers spend their day, how quickly we ship, how confidently we operate in production, and how effectively we harness AI across the SDLC. This is a critically important role with executive visibility and a clear mandate to deliver measurable results.

What Will You Do?

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Lead, grow, and develop a multi-team organization of managers and senior engineers spanning Infrastructure Services and Developer Tooling.
  • Define and execute the vision for developer experience, including build, test, deployment, artifact management, internal platform capabilities, and AI-augmented developer workflows.
  • Own the strategy and rollout of AI tooling across the SDLC, including AI coding assistants, AI code review and PR automation, AI-assisted test generation, and AI engineering intelligence platforms. Drive adoption, measure impact, and ensure these tools are deployed safely and effectively.
  • Ensure the availability, performance, and security of the systems that engineers depend on every day.
  • Drive the evolution of CI/CD pipelines to be faster, more reliable, more self-service, and more secure, including embedding AI capabilities such as automated triage, intelligent test selection, and AI-assisted incident response.
  • Establish metrics and use them to drive measurable improvement in developer productivity.
  • Partner with security, legal, and AI leadership to set policy for AI-generated code, IP and licensing, data handling, model selection, and acceptable-use guardrails.
  • Partner with security, SRE, product engineering, architecture, and AI/ML teams to align on standards, golden paths, and shared platforms.
  • Own the budget, tooling investments, and vendor relationships for the developer experience portfolio, including AI tooling spend.
  • Recruit, mentor, and retain exceptional engineering leaders and individual contributors.
What Skills and Knowledge Will You Bring?

Ideal candidates will have:

  • 10+ years of progressive engineering experience, including 5+ years of engineering management and at least 2+ years leading managers (managing managers).
  • Demonstrated track record in building and scaling developer experience, platform engineering, or DevOps organizations in a mid-to-large engineering org.
  • Deep, hands-on familiarity with the modern CI/CD and developer tooling stack: Jenkins, ArgoCD, Artifactory or equivalents.
  • Practical experience evaluating, rolling out, and measuring the impact of AI developer tooling.
  • A clear point of view on how AI changes the SDLC and how to capture that value without compromising on security, code quality, or developer trust.
  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes, GitOps, containerization, and cloud-native deployment patterns.
  • Experience in defining and operating internal developer platforms and golden paths.
  • Excellent strategic thinking paired with a willingness to go deep on technical decisions when needed.
  • Strong communication and executive presence; able to influence across engineering and partner with security, compliance, legal, and product leadership.
  • A demonstrated bias toward developer empathy, self-service, and reducing toil.
