Job description

Engineering Manager — CoCounsel Tax

We're building the next generation of AI-powered software for tax and accounting professionals, and we're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team shaping the future of CoCounsel Tax. This team was formed from Thomson Reuters' acquisition of the AI startup Materia and combines the agility of a startup with the resources of a global leader.

You'll manage a team of engineers building AI-powered systems which power CoCounsel Tax - CoCounsel Tax - the AI tax assistant for tax professionals | Thomson Reuters

About the Role

As Engineering Manager, you will:

  • Build and grow the team. Hire, mentor, and develop a high-performing group of backend and AI engineers. Partner on cross-org engineering hiring to grow the broader CoCounsel Tax organization.

  • Drive velocity and engineering health. Partner with engineering leaders to improve team processes, rituals, code review, and ways of working so engineers can ship faster with confidence.

  • Set direction with product and design. Collaborate with PM and Design on road mapping and longer-term planning, ensuring the team is organized around the right priorities with clear ownership.

  • Be a thought partner on agentic tax workflows. Help shape the technical direction of a more agentic future for tax workflows

  • Scope AI features end-to-end. Be involved early in the design and scoping of AI-driven features across the product, working closely with Labs/Research teams.

  • Remove friction across the org. Identify and resolve cross-team blockers so engineers can focus on the highest-leverage work, and drive process improvements that scale across the broader organization.

  • Grow domain depth. Over time, develop deep expertise in the tax ecosystem, and the automation opportunities within it.

About You:

You're a fit for the role of Engineering Manager, if your background includes:

  • 8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with 3+ years managing engineering teams.

  • Track record of leading teams that ship production-grade backend systems at scale.

  • Strong technical foundation in backend development and cloud infrastructure; comfortable diving into architecture discussions, code reviews, and design decisions.

  • Experience partnering with PM, Design, and cross-functional leaders to set strategy and execute against it.

  • Excellent communicator; able to set clear goals, give direct feedback, and align stakeholders across an org.

  • Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment where priorities evolve quickly.

Preferred
  • Experience shipping AI-driven or agentic systems in production (LLM orchestration, RAG, agent frameworks, evaluation pipelines, etc.).

  • Strong technical foundation in Python and AWS

  • Familiarity with modern LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic) and how to productionize them reliably.

  • Background managing mixed teams of backend and AI/ML engineers.

  • Exposure to tax, accounting, or other regulated professional domains.
