Job description

Job Overview

Fairview is hiring a Nursing Station Technician (NST) for our Med/Surg 7C unit at our M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center - East Bank location in Minneapolis, MN.

This position will be working 0.6 FTE (48 hours every two weeks). The shift length will be 8 hour, rotating day and evening shifts (7a-3:30pm days and 3pm-11:30pm evening shifts). This position will also work every other weekend rotation.

About 7C:

  • Adult patients that require general medical care (pulmonary, rheumatology, renal, infectious disease, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and cardiac monitoring of medicine patients)
  • Bed Capacity: 38
  • Cares for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/interventions on the unit and performs advanced monitoring using current technology
  • Manages complex medication and infusion therapies
  • Patient Ratios: Day and Evening shift: 7-9 patients Night shift: 9-10 patients

The University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC) represents an integrated academic health care system and is comprised of two hospitals and dozens of adult specialty clinics on located on both the East and West banks of the UMMC campus in Minneapolis. It is the flagship facility of Fairview providing breakthrough medicine and redefining the health of our community.

Responsibilities:

The Nursing Station Technician position deliver direct patient care and is cross trained to Health Unit Coordinator duties.

In this role, you will work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to demonstrate excellent customer service, teamwork and communication skills with patients, families, and the healthcare team on a fast-paced unit. Other job duties include:

  • Patient care such as personal hygiene, vitals, daily activities, repositioning, transporting, and feeding
  • Maintaining unit desk area functions such as answering phones, processing admissions, discharging and transferring forms, transcribing orders, assembling patient charts and ordering tests
  • Setting up and maintaining patient rooms
  • Ordering and stocking of supplies

Required Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification required. Ontrack participants much be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.

And one of the following:

  • Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview sponsored Nursing Assistant program.

Or

  • Six months of recent direct care experience in a long term, home care or acute care setting. (Appropriate roles may include, Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant or Emergency Room Technician)

Or

  • Current enrollment in an LPN, RN or Nurse Practitioner program, and completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotation within the program

Or

  • Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. This requirement does not need to be maintained throughout employment and is not required if subsequently transferring into another Nursing Assistant or Nursing Station Tech or Nursing Station Attendant position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a Health Unit Coordinator, Nursing Assistant, or other related experience
