Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, is hiring for a full-time, Director of Accounting. The Director of Accounting is responsible for all areas relating to financial reporting including, but not limited to: overseeing the daily operations of the accounting department, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements, completing/inspecting all necessary reconciliations and year-end audit procedures, monitoring and analyzing financial accounting data, assisting with creating and maintaining budgets, forecasts and cash flow analysis as well as establishing and enforcing proper accounting methods, policies and principles. This position will be responsible for using the budget and accounting statements to bring to life and share the stories of our programs and mission.ย

Essential Job Duties:


Leadership & Strategic Support

  • Provide leadership to Finance department staff and volunteersย 
  • Lead hiring, training, performance management, and ongoing development of direct reportsย 
  • Train departments on finance policies and proceduresย 
  • Serve as an active member of the 403(b) Committeeย 
  • Partner with the Development team to ensure accurate reporting of giftsย 
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and department managers to prepare the annual budgetย 
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and visibility across financial operationsย 

Accounting Operations

  • Manage daily accounting operations and ensure timely, accurate financial reportingย 
  • Oversee general ledger maintenance and account reconciliationsย 
  • Monitor accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash flow activitiesย 
  • Ensure timely processing of payments, including weekly check runs and electronic paymentsย 
  • Maintain vendor records within accounting systemsย 
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of the accounting databaseย 
  • Track and reconcile prepaids, deferred revenue, and capital campaign pledge revenueย 
  • Perform banking transactions as needed (e.g., processing monthly EFT gifts)ย 
  • Ensure adequate cash balances across accountsย 

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare financial statements and perform variance analysesย 
  • Support month-end and year-end close processesย 
  • Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and variance analysesย 
  • Perform ongoing budget variance and cash flow analysisย 
  • Provide financial insights to support business decisions and operational performanceย 
  • Tell the story of our mission and programs through financial statementsย 

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, policies, and proceduresย 
  • Oversee preparation and filing of 1099s and other regulatory reporting requirementsย 
  • Ensure compliance with NYS Abandoned Property Lawsย 
  • Perform internal control procedures and support year-end audit processesย 
  • Coordinate with external auditors and provide required documentationย 
  • Ensure proper document retention in accordance with legal requirementsย 
  • Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen internal controlsย 
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable state and federal lawsย 
  • Observe all safety rules and regulationsย 
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in a related field strongly preferred. 5+ years of experience in accounting is strongly preferred. Non-profit experience preferred. 4+ years of leadership experience experience preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered if aligned with the position.

Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a professional demeanor, self-reliance, and resourcefulness. Strong organizational skills, with a high attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects and demands at one time. Proficient in using the most recent versions of computer software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, database management (Financial Edge preferred), and presentation software. Leadership and problem-solving ability.ย 

Physical Demands: Performs work primarily in an office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position during shift and move throughout the building. Performance may also require prolonged periods of repetitive motion. Occasionally required to move excessive weight.
