Position Summary
The Associate Director of Student Leadership and Service serves as a senior member of the student life team, providing strategic leadership and supervisory oversight for comprehensive leadership development programming, community service initiatives, and co-curricular learning recognition. This role combines program management, curriculum development, and administrative oversight to foster student growth through leadership education and service engagement. This individual will supervise the Assistant Director of Student Activities and Traditions.
Duties/Responsibilities
Leadership Program Development & Management (40%)
Oversee the comprehensive four-year leadership development program, including curriculum design, assessment, participant recruitment, and program evaluation.
Plan, coordinate, and execute two annual leadership retreats, including a specialized first-year student leadership retreat.
Provide direct supervision to the Assistant Director of Student Activities and Traditions.
Manage all logistical aspects of retreats, including site selection, vendor coordination, facilitation, transportation, budgeting, risk management, and participant registration.
Recruit and retain participants in leadership programs.
Coordinate and execute the Harolyn Torrain Leadership Scholar Program, including application processes, selection criteria, cohort programming, and day-to-day management.
Supervise and mentor student leadership program mentors, providing ongoing training, professional development, and performance feedback.
Develop and deliver engaging leadership curriculum aligned with institutional learning outcomes and leadership theory and practice.
Conduct regular curriculum review and assessment to ensure relevance and effectiveness of leadership programming.
Facilitate workshops, seminars, and training sessions on leadership competencies including, but not limited to, communication, teamwork, ethical decision-making, and social change.
Collaborate with academic departments and campus partners to integrate leadership learning across the student experience.
Maintain comprehensive records of participant progress, program outcomes, and leadership competency development.
Develop robust benchmarking and reporting on student learning and achievement to be provided to internal and external stakeholders.
Coordinate leadership program recognition events, awards ceremonies, and celebration of student achievements.
Community Service & Service-Learning Initiatives (30%)
Develop and implement a comprehensive community service strategy that connects students with meaningful volunteer opportunities locally and beyond.
Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations, non-profits, and civic agencies to create sustainable service opportunities.
Coordinate service projects and events, including days of service initiatives and ongoing volunteer placements.
Create and oversee Student Volunteer councils/board made up of service and philanthropic student organizations.
Integrate service-learning pedagogy into co-curricular programming, helping students connect service experiences with academic learning and leadership development.
Provide training and resources to student leaders on effective community engagement, asset-based community development, and ethical service practices.
Design reflection activities and frameworks that deepen student learning from service experiences and promote leadership development.
Track and report on student service participation, community impact hours, and outcomes of service initiatives.
Develop marketing and communication strategies to increase student participation in service opportunities.
Assess the impact of service programs on both student learning and community benefit, making data-informed improvements.
Coordinate recognition programs for outstanding service contributions and community engagement.
Ensure all service initiatives adhere to institutional policies, community partner expectations, and best practices in community engagement.
Co-Curricular Transcript & Engage Path Management (15%)
Serve as the primary administrator for Student Life's co-curricular transcript initiative, ensuring accurate documentation of student involvement and learning.
Create developmental pathways in Engage USI that allow students to earn badging and certifications through intentional engagement and skill development experiences across their four years.
Create training programs and resources for students, staff, and faculty on utilizing the co-curricular transcript system effectively
Conduct workshops and information sessions across campus to promote awareness and participation in co-curricular transcript opportunities
Review and validate student submissions for co-curricular transcript inclusion, ensuring quality and alignment with established criteria
Collaborate with career services, academic advising, and other departments to integrate co-curricular learning into holistic student development
Establish quality assurance processes for verifying student involvement and ensuring transcript credibility for external audiences
Continuously assess and refine the co-curricular transcript program based on student feedback, institutional priorities, and national best practices.
Develop promotional materials and communication campaigns to encourage widespread student adoption of co-curricular transcript tools.
Administrative Operations (5%)
Develop and manage programmatic budgets for leadership programs and service initiatives.
Monitor expenditures, reconcile accounts, and ensure fiscal responsibility across all program areas.
Coordinate contracts and agreements with vendors, community partners, and service providers.
Ensure compliance with institutional policies related to purchasing, travel, risk management, and student conduct.
Serve on institutional committees related to student engagement, leadership development, and service.
Student Life Team Member (10%)
Assist in conducting ongoing assessment, research, and evaluation of departmental programs and utilize the findings to shape program efforts and the preparation of a variety of reports.
Assist in the administrative responsibility for budget development and management of budgets for programs under the responsibility of position.
Manage sensitive and confidential information in adherence to university policies, FERPA, Campus Security Authority, and other compliance requirements.
Coordinate select departmental sponsored programs and provide onsite event management as needed for large departmental programs and other programs as directed.
Responsible for the development of goals and objectives, on behalf of the department, for the areas of responsibility and assist in implementing overall departmental goals and programs.
Represent Student Life at internal and external events as directed.
Serve on University committees and represent the University at selected local, state, regional, and national professional conferences and meetings.
Other duties as required or assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Master's degree in student personnel, counseling and development, higher education, or similar field.
3-5 years of related work experience.
Ability to stimulate student interest and involvement.
Maintains strong organizational, time management, and written and verbal communication skills.
Manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize departmental needs.
Ability to manage multiple demands in a setting of high student contact and interaction.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Teams, etc.).
Comfortable learning new skills and technology.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision at times; exercising sound judgement and initiative.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
Supervisory experience of student or professional staff.
Experience in coordinating and advising students, leadership development programs, and program development.
Experience in the development and presentation of workshops, classes, and training.
Knowledge of the basic principles and theories of student development and educational administration, and public relations.
Functional Requirements
Remaining in a stationary position at a desk or workstation for part of the time for the assigned duties.
Physical access to classrooms, meeting rooms, and events throughout campus; and to local and regional venues for occasional conferences/events. This includes facilitating trainings, leading and attending meetings and programs as required for program implementation.
Proficient use of computers and computer systems (software and hardware) to set up functions, enter data, obtain information, process information and create documents. Must be able to use computer-generated reports to extract and process information.
Creativity and resourcefulness in developing new ideas and in recruiting and supporting student leaders.
The presentation of a consistently professional demeanor at all times, even in difficult, negative or frustrating situations.
The application of effective diplomatic and interpersonal communication skills in all settings.
Effective problem solving and the presentation of a professional demeanor while meeting deadlines and responding to departmental and student needs, even during demanding conditions such as multiple priorities and short-notice deadlines.
Extensive physical movement, and physical manipulation of loads up to 20 pounds, in preparation for and throughout events to oversee activities, make presentations, and interact with staff, faculty, and students (dependent upon current staff availability, this may be a preference rather than requirement of the position).
Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements
Frequent irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, will be required to meet departmental deadlines and for implementation of programming. Minimal travel will be required.
