    The Director of Development is the strategic and operational leader responsible for architecting, executing, and continuously refining DWD’s development operating model in alignment with the organization’s mission, growth priorities, and long-term sustainability goals.

    This role owns the development portfolio strategy, fundraising systems, donor stewardship standards, and revenue pipeline governance across major gifts, annual giving, institutional funding, grant development, and corporate philanthropy. The Director ensures the development function is equipped to drive philanthropic growth, strengthen funder confidence, and support program expansion with financial discipline and operational readiness.

    The key focus of this role is strategic fundraising growth and diversification, including expanding DWD’s donor and funder base, building compelling cases for support, strengthening institutional and corporate partnerships, and ensuring development activities are aligned with programmatic priorities, measurable outcomes, and community impact. The Director serves as a key external representative of DWD and collaborates closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to translate organizational priorities into sustainable philanthropic investment.

    Position Responsibilities

    Development strategy and operating system ownership

  • Develop, manage, and evaluate the development vision, annual fundraising strategy, operating rhythm, and quality standards for all fundraising activities.
  • Build and maintain a comprehensive development plan that supports DWD’s short and longrange goals through diversified revenue sources, including government, foundation, corporate, and individual philanthropy.
  • Establish and refine the systems, policies, procedures, and accountability practices that support effective and sustainable development operations.
  • Portfolio leadership and executive funder stewardship

  • Serve as the leadership owner for major donor, foundation, corporate, and public funding relationships; maintain executive alignment and accountability to funding outcomes.
  • Lead cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and renewal strategies for key philanthropic and institutional partners.
  • Develop highquality donor stewardship practices, impact communications, and relationship management standards that strengthen trust, retention, and longterm investment.
  • Strategic philanthropic growth, pipeline development, and revenue diversification

  • Identify, evaluate, and structure new funding opportunities across major gifts, annual giving, grants, corporate philanthropy, and other revenuegenerating partnerships.
  • Build and maintain a healthy development pipeline with clear segmentation, movement strategy, and stewardship plans across donor and funder categories.

  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, business, public administration, English, or a related field.
  • 6 to 8+ years of progressive fundraising or development experience, including leadership responsibility for a comprehensive development function.
  • Demonstrated success in major gifts, annual giving, grants, corporate partnerships, and donor stewardship.
  • Proven ability to design and implement fundraising strategy, set revenue goals, and manage a diversified development portfolio.
  • Strong track record of securing institutional, corporate, and individual philanthropic support.
  • Experience building and managing a donor pipeline, including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and renewal.
  • Demonstrated success writing and managing foundation, corporate, and government grants.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to represent the organization effectively with donors, funders, board members, and community stakeholders.
  • Experience partnering crossfunctionally with finance, programs, communications, and executive leadership to align fundraising strategy with organizational priorities.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce or other donor CRM systems, including reporting, pipeline management, and data hygiene.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to develop cases for support, donor materials, grant proposals, and impact reports.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and performance management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, lead through ambiguity, and manage multiple priorities with a high level of accountability.
  • Willingness to travel within DWD’s current and future footprints, evenings or weekends as needed for donor engagement and events.
  • Licensure / Certification / Registration

    Valid Driver's License and regular access to a vehicle required.
