Job description

The Director of Development is a strategic leadership position responsible for designing, directing, and executing a comprehensive fundraising program that advances the mission, vision, and long-term sustainability of the organization. This role provides oversight of all philanthropic revenue streams, including annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation partnerships, special events, sponsorships, and donor stewardship initiatives.

Working collaboratively with executive leadership, the Board of Directors, and key stakeholders, the Director of Development develops and implements integrated fundraising strategies that ensure consistent messaging and maximizes the effectiveness of all marketing, development, and event activities. The position establishes annual fundraising goals, develops measurable objectives, and monitors departmental performance through monthly key performance indicators (KPIs), data analysis, and reporting to drive accountability and continuous improvement.

The Director of Development is responsible for cultivating and strengthening relationships with donors, prospects, and community partners while creating and implementing a comprehensive planned giving program designed to build long-term support. The role ensures exceptional donor engagement and stewardship throughout the donor lifecycle, fostering meaningful connections that increase donor retention, loyalty, and giving levels.

As the organization's fundraising leader, the Director of Development champions a culture of philanthropy and ensures all fundraising activities are conducted in accordance with the highest standards of ethical fundraising practices, donor confidentiality, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate combines strategic vision, relationship-building expertise, analytical skills, and a proven ability to achieve ambitious fundraising goals while strengthening the organization's visibility and impact within the community.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • CFRE Preferred
  • Proven success securing six-figure gifts
  • Experience with donor databases (Blackbaud preferred)
  • Capital Campaign experience
  • 5-7 years of progressive nonprofit fundraising, including events
  • 3+ years leading a development team
Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills:
  • Possess both verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess active listening skills
  • Possess a high degree of social perceptiveness
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Blackbaud
  • Effectively utilizes time management skills in managing time and prioritizing tasks for self and others.
  • Possess the ability to coach others in regard to performing tasks and to interacting appropriately with clients and volunteers
  • Ability to monitor/assess the performance of self and others to make improvements and take corrective action
