The Role


The Director of Engineering Technology is responsible for leading the strategy, implementation, and continuous improvement of engineering technologies across a multidisciplinary architectural and engineering organization. This role ensures that digital tools, platforms, workflows, and data systems support high-quality design delivery, operational efficiency, and innovation across multiple engineering disciplines and market sectors.

The Director partners closely with engineering leaders, design teams, IT, and executive leadership to align technology initiatives with business objectives, enhance project delivery, and maintain a competitive advantage.


Responsibilities

Technology Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and execute a firm-wide engineering technology strategy aligned with business goals and growth initiatives
  • Lead digital transformation efforts, including adoption of advanced design technologies, automation, and data-driven workflows
  • Evaluate emerging technologies (e.g., BIM, digital twins, AI-assisted design, cloud collaboration platforms) and recommend adoption where appropriate
  • Serve as a thought leader and advisor to executive leadership on engineering technology trends and investments

Design Technology & Tools Management

  • Oversee the selection, implementation, and governance of engineering design tools and platforms (e.g., CAD, BIM, analysis software)
  • Ensure standardization across disciplines where appropriate while supporting specialized technical needs
  • Manage software licensing, vendor relationships, and tool performance to optimize ROI
  • Lead development and maintenance of design standards, templates, and best practices

Cross-Disciplinary Integration

  • Facilitate collaboration and consistency across multiple engineering disciplines (e.g., civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, environmental)
  • Promote interoperable workflows between architectural and engineering teams
  • Support integrated project delivery methods leveraging shared models and data environments

Innovation & Process Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, quality, and efficiency of design processes
  • Advance automation strategies, including scripting, parametric design, and workflow optimization
  • Champion innovation initiatives, hackathons, and pilot programs to test new tools and methods
  • Measure and track performance metrics related to technology adoption and impact

Data Management & Digital Delivery

  • Establish standards for data governance, model management, and digital deliverables
  • Support development of digital delivery frameworks, including BIM execution plans and model-based deliverables
  • Oversee integration of engineering data with enterprise systems (e.g., project management, asset management)
  • Promote use of data analytics and dashboards to improve decision-making

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead and develop a team of design technology specialists, BIM managers, and engineers
  • Provide mentorship and training programs to enhance digital competency across the organization
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, learning, and innovation
  • Partner with HR and leadership on workforce planning and skills development

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Collaborate with IT to ensure infrastructure, cybersecurity, and cloud solutions meet engineering technology needs
  • Work closely with project managers and discipline leads to ensure technology supports project delivery requirements
  • Engage with clients when needed to support digital delivery expectations and innovation initiatives


Qualifications


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering or architectural design, with increasing responsibility in technology leadership
  • Experience in a multidisciplinary A/E environment serving multiple markets (e.g., infrastructure, commercial, industrial, healthcare)
  • Proven track record of leading technology initiatives and digital transformation programs

Technical Expertise

  • Deep knowledge of engineering design platforms (e.g., Autodesk suite, Bentley systems, analysis tools)
  • Experience with BIM processes, standards, and collaboration platforms
  • Familiarity with automation tools (e.g., Dynamo, Python, scripting environments) and data integration
  • Understanding of cloud-based collaboration and common data environments (CDEs)
