Director of Accounting

Location: Atlanta, GA (Hybrid – In Office Required)

Potbelly Sandwich Works is seeking a Director of Accounting to join our team in Atlanta. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for internal reporting, cross-functional partnership, and supporting key growth initiatives—particularly within our franchise business.

As a key leader within the accounting organization, this role reports to the Executive Director – Controller and is responsible for executing against departmental priorities, strengthening processes, and supporting scalability across the function. The Director of Accounting will serve as a central liaison across Operations, Finance, Franchising, and our parent company, ensuring accurate, timely, and insightful financial reporting in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.


What You’ll Do

  • Oversee internal accounting and reporting processes, collaborating regularly with parent company to ensure alignment
  • Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Finance, and Franchising to support performance and improve visibility
  • Oversee franchise accounting activities, ensuring processes and reporting appropriately support a growing and evolving franchise model
  • Support the franchise growth pipeline, including new store openings, by ensuring accounting processes scale effectively with expansion
  • Establish and drive process improvements, leveraging systems and technology to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
  • Support and participate in systems implementations and enhancements, improving data integrity and reporting capabilities
  • Manage and develop team members, providing guidance, performance feedback, and development opportunities for two direct reports


What We’re Looking For

  • CPA, required
  • Strong leadership experience in accounting, ideally within a multi-unit or franchise environment
  • Deep understanding of financial reporting, close processes, and internal controls
  • Experience participating in or supporting accounting systems implementations (e.g., ERP or reporting tools) preferred
  • Background in public accounting (Big 4 or similar) strongly preferred
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and operate effectively in a matrixed environment
  • Experience working within or reporting into a parent company structure is a plus
