What is the difference between Director Modeling Simulation Engineer vs Modeling Simulation Engineer?

AspectDirector Modeling Simulation EngineerModeling Simulation Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science, or related fields; often with leadership experienceRequires a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science, or related fields
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, manages projects, and collaborates with senior managementFocuses on developing and running simulations, working within engineering teams
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace, defense, automotive, and technology sectors for high-level simulation oversightCommonly employed in similar industries for technical simulation tasks

The main difference is that the Director Modeling Simulation Engineer oversees teams and strategic projects, while the Modeling Simulation Engineer focuses on technical simulation work. The director role involves leadership, project management, and higher-level decision-making, whereas the engineer role emphasizes hands-on simulation development and analysis.

How does a Director Modeling Simulation Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive project success?

A Director Modeling Simulation Engineer often works closely with teams such as product development, systems engineering, and software engineering to ensure simulation models align with overall project goals. This role involves leading technical discussions, translating complex modeling requirements into actionable tasks, and providing guidance to ensure accuracy and integration of simulations within larger systems. Frequent collaboration may also include presenting findings to stakeholders, mentoring junior engineers, and coordinating with project managers to align timelines and deliverables. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential to facilitate effective teamwork and project outcomes.

What is a Director Modeling Simulation Engineer?

A Director Modeling Simulation Engineer is a senior-level leader responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of complex models and simulations, often within industries such as aerospace, defense, or engineering. This role involves managing teams of engineers and scientists, setting technical strategy, and ensuring that simulation tools meet organizational goals and project requirements. The director collaborates with other departments, ensures quality control, and often represents the modeling and simulation function to stakeholders. They are also involved in resource planning, budgeting, and mentoring junior staff. The position requires extensive technical expertise and leadership experience.

Job description

Job Description

Verity was founded with a focus on providing advanced science and technology and business management services to commercial and government clients. Our team comprises engineers and analysts with subject matter expertise in various domains, including software development, simulation technologies, experimentation support tools, and systems analysis methodologies. Additionally, we have applied our expertise in evaluating, analyzing, and simulating emerging threats. These capabilities have been successfully applied to not only Science and Technology (S&T) programs, but also major weapon system acquisition programs and gap-filling warfighter solutions.

We are seeking a Senior Modeling & Simulation Engineer to support cutting-edge simulation development across Air and Missile Defense and Long-Range Fires domains. This is an opportunity to make a direct impact on mission-critical defense programs while working in a collaborative, mission-focused environment.

Position Overview

You'll work independently to design, develop, and maintain high-fidelity simulations of military systems as part of a larger project or program. This role requires strong software engineering fundamentals combined with experience developing physics-based or behavior-based models of real-world defense systems. You'll take ownership of your work with minimal supervision, contributing meaningfully across the full simulation development lifecycle - from requirements and design through implementation and test.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently design, develop, and maintain simulation models of military systems including radars, Command and Control (C2) systems, and flight models for missiles and/or aircraft
  • Develop high-performance simulation software using C++ and/or Rust
  • Translate system requirements, technical documents, and domain knowledge into accurate, validated simulation components
  • Perform unit and integration testing to verify model fidelity and correctness
  • Produce clear technical documentation covering design, implementation, and test
  • Integrate simulation components into larger simulation architectures and frameworks
  • Support analysis and experimentation efforts using simulation-based tooling
  • Participate in Agile workflows including code reviews, version control (Git/GitLab), and task planning

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional software development experience with a significant focus on modeling and simulation
  • Proficiency in C++ and/or Rust for performance-sensitive simulation development
  • Experience developing models of real-world physical or military systems (e.g., radar, guidance systems, flight dynamics, or C2)
  • Ability to work independently, manage assigned tasks, and deliver quality software with minimal supervision
  • Experience with version control systems (Git/GitLab)
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Air and Missile Defense, Long Range Fires, or related defense domains
  • Familiarity with DoD M&S frameworks, standards, or simulation architectures (e.g., DIS, HLA, AFSIM, OneSAF, or similar)
  • Understanding of radar phenomenology, C2 architectures, or 6-DOF/3-DOF flight modeling
  • Active security clearance or ability to obtain one
