Job Summary

The Leonardo DRS RAPID Laboratory is looking for a confident, highly motivated Scientist with semiconductor materials and device modeling experience to join our Research and Development team. We are looking for a strong candidate with experience in modeling key properties of photodiodes and infrared absorbing materials systems such as direct and indirect bandgap semiconductors, dark current, carrier generation/recombination and lifetimes, and carrier transport.  As a Scientist, you will also become an expert in infrared photodiodes, focal plane array architecture and fabrication, and the application to advanced sensors and avalanche photodiodes (APDs).  You will be an integral part of DRS' new product and technology development efforts in infrared sensors. You will interface with other team members representing a wide range of disciplines, including material science, process engineering, device fabrication, test engineering, and system design.  You will work with other scientists to model the performance of current and novel device architectures for a variety of characteristics and aid in the optimization of device designs that both meet aggressive performance targets and are manufacturable. To that end, you will work in a team with other scientists and engineers including fabrication specialists, product/process engineers, and test and systems engineers to optimize device designs for yield and manufacturability. In addition, you will be the technical and/or project lead on development projects guiding both technical direction as well as coordination of key technical resources.

Job Responsibilities

Model new device architectures that you or your colleagues may propose. Understand device design parameters and specification requirements and their impact on device performance. Help shape device architecture choices through semiconductor device modeling.
Understand advanced semiconductor device physics to comprehend the effects process, fabrication, and integration have on final device performance and communicate technical requirements to engineers and scientists to ensure success.
Construct and coordinate experimental plans to solve problems. Identify key input and output variables and provide analysis of results.  Suggest improvements or fixes or experiments to help unravel unknowns.  Lead the execution and data analysis of those experiments as appropriate.
Participate and contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams.
Organize, interpret, and present results to technical peers as well as to upper management or customers.

Qualifications
  • Doctorate (PhD) Degree in relevant discipline such as Materials Science, Physics, or Electrical Engineering.
  • 3+ years in semiconductor device physics and modeling
  • Strong coding skills to maintain, modify, and create device performance models for a variety of solid-state device architectures and phenomenology.
  • Ability to understand and analyze data related to semiconductor device performance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The candidate must be organized, proactive, and able to communicate to both highly technical and programmatic audiences with equal ease.
Preferred Skills and Experience

Knowledge and experience with a variety of semiconductor fabrication processes.
Experience with designing, fabricating, or testing infrared photodetectors and sensors.
Knowledge of photodiodes or other sensors or photovoltaics.
Ability to independently conduct various electrical test measurements on devices and analyze the data to draw conclusions.
MATLAB, Python, Lumerical FDTD, LabView, JMP, SpotFire, MiniTab and other relevant engineering software packages to perform modeling and/or analyze data.

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.

Taking care of our people is a top priority at Leonardo DRS. We are proud to offer competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a company contribution to a health savings account, telemedicine, life and disability insurance, legal insurance, and a 401(k) savings plan.
