Job Description Summary

The Director, Interoperability and Interfaces will lead the design, development, and execution of enterprise-wide interoperability strategies, enabling seamless and secure exchange of health data across systems, providers, and partners. This leader will be responsible for ensuring that clinical and operational systems communicate effectively through robust interfaces, APIs, and data integration solutions.

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Define and drive the organization's interface and interoperability strategy aligned with business and clinical goals
    • Establish governance, standards, and best practices for system integration and data exchange
  • Integration Architecture & Oversight
    • Oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of interfaces (HL7, FHIR, APIs, etc.) and custom interfaces between EHRs, labs, payers, pharmacies, health information exchanges (HIEs), and third-party systems.
    • Ensure scalable, secure, and high-performing integration architecture across platforms
  • Operational Excellence
    • Lead interface engine operations, including monitoring, incident management, and performance tuning
    • Ensure high availability and reliability of data exchange across systems
  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Build, mentor, and manage high-performing integration and interoperability teams
    • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner with clinical, IT, product, and vendor teams to support integration needs and priorities
    • Translate business and clinical requirements into technical integration solutions
  • Standards & Compliance
    • Ensure adherence to healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, X12, etc.) and regulatory requirements (HIPAA, TEFCA, etc.)
    • Stay current with evolving interoperability frameworks and industry trends
  • Vendor & Stakeholder Management
    • Manage relationships with EHR vendors, third-party partners, and integration platforms
    • Evaluate and select tools and technologies to support interoperability initiatives
  • Data Quality & Governance
    • Ensure integrity, accuracy, and consistency of data exchanged between systems
    • Collaborate with data governance teams to enforce data standards and policies
  • Project & Portfolio Management
    • Oversee integration project portfolio, including prioritization, resource allocation, and delivery timelines
    • Drive successful execution of complex, cross-system integration initiatives
    • Data Integration: Oversee data ingestion, normalization, and exchange to support real-time and batch processing for clinical, analytics, and reporting use cases
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement
    • Identify opportunities to modernize integrations (e.g., API-first, event-driven architecture)
    • Lead initiatives to improve interoperability maturity and reduce technical debt

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in healthcare IT with significant leadership responsibility in interoperability, system integration, or health data exchange.
  • Extensive experience with HL7 (v2/v3), FHIR, CCD/C-CDA, X12, ADT, and API-based integration in a clinical environment.
  • Knowledge of interoperability frameworks, including TEFCA, Carequality, and CommonWell.
  • Familiarity with EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, NextGen), interface engines, and health information exchange platforms.
  • Proven track record of managing complex integration projects and cross-functional technical teams.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, privacy/security standards, and health IT certification criteria.

Preferred Certifications

  • HL7 Certified Interface Developer
  • Health Level Seven (HL7) or FHIR proficiency certifications
  • PMP, CPHIMS, or CHDA
  • Cloud integration or API management credentials (e.g., AWS, Azure, Mulesoft)
