Position Summary

The Chief Underwriting Officer is the most senior underwriting executive at American Modern Insurance Group (AMIG), a $3 billion personal insurance property and casualty insurer and subsidiary of Munich Re.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the CUO owns the full lifecycle of underwriting excellence from setting risk appetite and enforcing underwriting standards, to managing the portfolio with precision, to expanding the product and capitalthat will fuel AMIG's next phase of growth. Alongside these core mandates, the CUO will help architect AMIG's AI and digital underwriting strategy, a nascent and well-resourced priority that will define how the company competes over the next decade.

This is an enterprise leadership role. The CUO leads a multi-functional organization spanning underwriting, actuarial, pricing, CAT modeling, and product development, and serves as a key voice on AMIG's strategic direction with the CEO, GSI CUO, and the Executive Management Board.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting Strategy & Governance

  • Develop and own the underwriting strategy, policies, and guidelines across all personal insurance products, Delegated Underwriting Authorities, and CPD commercial product and Dwelling Landlord product, including clear underwriting authorities, guidelines, risk appetite statements, and referral protocols; ensure consistent application across all products, states, and distribution channels
  • Maintain rigorous underwriting governance, including audit readiness, documentation standards, authority controls, and regulatory compliance across all operating states; drive corrective action where needed
  • Monitor underwriting performance, market conditions, competitor activity, regulatory changes, and emerging risks; report findings with recommended strategic responses

Portfolio Management & Risk Analytics

  • Manage risk selection, pricing adequacy, and portfolio composition to achieve a balanced, diversified, and profitable portfolio across all personal insurance product lines
  • Lead large account review meetings and portfolio management analyses; translate data insights into actionable underwriting decisions
  • Ensure robust management of catastrophe exposure, accumulation risk, and volatility consistent with defined enterprise risk appetite
  • Leverage CAT modeling, actuarial analytics, and pricing models to deliver a risk framework that operates at the portfolio level
  • Oversee actuarial and pricing functions to ensure rating adequacy, trend monitoring, and loss development are integrated into all underwriting decisions
  • Oversee management of company and account loss exposure; implement proactive loss mitigation strategies in partnership with claims and risk management

Capacity, Reinsurance & Capital Development

  • Serve as the AMIG representative in bringing forward business requirements to GSI Ceded Re for corporate reinsurance solutions; maintaining and deepening strong relationships with GSI and Munich RE Group.
  • Represent AMIG with regulators, rating agencies, distribution partners, and industry forums
  • Lead acquisition of additional underwriting capital and product capacity, including property capacity (excess, quota share, fronting); DUA agreements for third-party capacity.
  • Coordinate with capacity providers and carriers to ensure alignment on underwriting guidelines, pricing, authority levels, referrals, and audits

Product & Solution Development

  • Drive development, positioning, and delivery of innovative, market-leading personal insurance products including admitted and non-admitted.
  • Lead product development initiatives including new product concepts, coverage enhancements, policy language improvements, and rate and form filings in coordination with capacity providers
  • Articulate and sharpen AMIG's value proposition in response to changing market dynamics; communicate differentiated value clearly to the producer distribution network

AI, Digital & Technology Leadership

  • Develop and execute a multi-year AI and digital underwriting roadmap that materially improves underwriting precision, speed, and scalability
  • Champion adoption of AI-powered tools across the underwriting lifecycle: predictive risk scoring and ML-driven appetite models at point of submission; AI-assisted CAT modeling and real-time exposure aggregation; automated underwriting decisioning; NLP and document AI for policy review, endorsement processing, and audit; digital dashboards providing underwriters real-time portfolio-level risk signals
  • Partner with technology leadership to build data infrastructure, third-party data integrations, and API connectivity with carriers and capacity providers
  • Evaluate and integrate InsurTech partnerships that accelerate digital underwriting capabilities
  • Build a data-driven underwriting culture, transitioning from spreadsheet-based management to real-time analytics and exception-based underwriting

Organizational Leadership & Talent

  • Build, lead, and inspire a high-performing organization spanning underwriting, actuarial, pricing, CAT modeling, and product development
  • Lead the cultural transition from experience-dominant decisioning to insight-enabled underwriting while preserving specialty expertise
  • Develop underwriting training programs to drive consistency in risk selection, pricing philosophy, and portfolio management across the organization
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with claims, actuarial, distribution, and product line leaders
  • Partner with HR to attract, develop, and retain top underwriting talent; foster a culture of analytical rigor, collaboration, diversity, and inclusion

Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate

  • Demonstrated P&L ownership at scale; experience managing or overseeing $3B+ in written premium with accountability for profitability targets
  • Deep expertise in personal insurance: homeowners, collections, excess/umbrella, watercraft, and related specialty products
  • Direct familiarity with DUA agreements, reinsurance mechanisms, fronting arrangements, and alternative risk structures
