What will you do?
A day in the life of an Art Director, Retail at Altra looks a little like this.
The Retail Art Director supports the execution of Altra Running's brand across retail environments. This role is focused on bringing established creative direction to life through in-store and physical experiences, ensuring all retail touch points are clear, consistent, and visually compelling.
Working closely with the Creative Director, Associate Creative Directors, and retail marketing teams, you will assist in developing and producing retail assets from concept support through final production. You will play a key role in translating brand direction into real-world retail applications while learning how to think through the full shopper experience.
Let's break down that day-in-the-life a bit more.
  • Hands-on Art Director with experience or a strong interest in retail, leading projects from concept through production with a high standard of craft, detail, and quality.
  • Executes retail creative across in-store environments-including signage, windows, shop-in-shops, and retail toolkits-ensuring assets work cohesively across the full shopper journey.
  • Supports the translation of creative direction into consistent retail systems, assets, and layouts, assisting with concept development under senior creative guidance.
  • Interprets briefs and incorporates feedback to deliver accurate, on-brand, production-ready designs for print and fabrication.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects, timelines, and priorities while maintaining clarity and momentum.
  • Collaborates closely with retail marketing, traffic, production, and cross-functional partners to ensure timely and accurate project completion.
  • Curious and collaborative, with a strong awareness of design, photography, social, and digital/interactive trends, and a passion for (or genuine interest in) running, the outdoors, apparel, and footwear.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as needed to support the creative team and business goals.

Additionally, while formal education in a related field is great to have, we are most interested in your 2-4+ years of experience and professional achievements.
The foundation skills you will need in this position are:
  • Basic understanding of retail environments and in-store customer experience
  • Strong design fundamentals (layout, typography, composition)
  • Portfolio demonstrating solid execution and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign); Figma is a plus
  • Understanding of print production and file setup
  • Ability to follow brand guidelines and apply feedback effectively
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

There are also a few skills that are not required but preferred.
  • Exposure to retail design, visual merchandising, or environmental graphics
  • Interest in spatial or 3D design
  • Experience working with multi-channel or campaign-based creative

Hiring Range:
$82,080.00 USD - $102,600.00 USD annually
Incentive Potential: This position is eligible for additional compensation awards that may include an annual incentive plan, sales incentive, or commission potential.
