Sababa Beachaway is a co-ed residential summer camp for rising fifth through twelfth graders, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Sababa immerses campers in the magic and majesty of the beach, adds the right amount of Jewish spiritual practice, and provides a fun, non-competitive yet challenging camp experience.

Sababa meaning "no worries" inspires us to be in the moment and fully present in all we do. We believe that surfing, sailing, scuba, ocean arts and ocean science promote wonder, awe, and curiosity - the cornerstones of Sababa Judaism. We celebrate that campers come from all different Jewish backgrounds, and that is what makes the Sababa Beachaway community so awesome!

Position Summary:

Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. They are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. Our counselors also serve as a big brother or sister to campers and live in a college dorm style setting with campers. Counselors should enjoy the outdoors and ocean activities and be a good role model for kids.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Enjoy working with children and capable of leading camp activities such as kickball, yoga, arts and crafts, etc.

  • Responsible for the daily well-being of youth in assigned activities

  • Ensure campers engage appropriately in all camp activities

  • Plan and lead age-appropriate games and activities throughout the day

  • Provide emotional support and guidance to campers

  • Ensure campers' medical needs are met through monitoring, and utilizing onsite infirmary staff

  • Foster growth in the areas of: life skills, self care, and interpersonal skills

  • Supervise camper groups as assigned

  • Engage campers with positivity, including participating in cheers, talent shows, and other activities such as swimming, arts & crafts, surfing, etc.

  • Foster character development consistent with Sababa philosophy

  • Other duties as specified by direct supervisor

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Previous experience in supervising and developing youth

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers and campers

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Desire to work outside 24/7

  • Experience working with youth in an overnight camp setting

  • Experience with one or more of the following: surfing, sailing, scuba diving, photography, oceanography, arts and crafts

Compensation: $2,100 - $2,400 for the summer; meals and housing included
