Stanley Martin Holdings is creating a dedicated risk management function to support a rapidly growing and expanding enterprise. The Director of Risk Management will help build and lead this new function, with responsibility for insurance, claims, operational risk, and related governance matters across Stanley Martinโ€™s homebuilding operations, mortgage company, title operations, land development business, and other current and future business activities.

This role supports the Chief Legal Officer in identifying, evaluating, and managing risks affecting Stanley Martin Holdings and its affiliated businesses. The Director of Risk Management will work directly with Legal, Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, Construction, Land, Purchasing, Safety, and other operations and business teams across several different business lines to help protect the Companyโ€™s assets, reduce losses, improve processes, and support operational execution across the organization. The role will also supervise an existing risk management employee and will be expected to develop the people, processes, systems, and reporting needed for a maturing risk management function.

Exceptional candidates with significant industry and leadership experience may be considered at the Vice President level.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Build, formalize, and continuously improve the Companyโ€™s risk management function, including scalable processes, reporting routines, tools, workflows, policies, templates, checklists, and service standards that can support the Companyโ€™s continued growth and expansion into new or expanded business lines.
  • Manage the Companyโ€™s property and casualty insurance programs, including general liability, workersโ€™ compensation, automobile liability, umbrella/excess liability, builderโ€™s risk, cyber liability, directorsโ€™ and officersโ€™ liability, fiduciary liability, professional liability, and other specialty coverages.
  • Lead the annual insurance renewal process, including gathering underwriting information, reviewing and submitting applications, working with brokers and carriers, supporting renewal presentations, and reviewing policies, endorsements, certificates of insurance, coverage summaries, and related materials for accuracy and completeness.
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with brokers, carriers, third-party administrators, consultants, outside counsel, and other insurance and risk management advisors.
  • Work with the Companyโ€™s captive insurance company and related advisors to evaluate and implement appropriate uses of the captive as part of the Companyโ€™s overall insurance, claims, risk financing, and risk management strategy.
  • Manage insurance claims, including workers' compensation, general liability, automobile liability, property damage, construction defect, employment practices, and other insured matters, and coordinate with carriers, brokers, adjusters, and internal stakeholders regarding claim reporting, coverage, and resolution.
  • Track claim trends, loss history, reserves, settlements, premiums, deductibles, self-insured retentions, claim payments, and other key risk management costs and data, and prepare practical reports and summaries for internal leadership.
  • Support the development and implementation of loss prevention, safety, incident reporting, and risk mitigation programs, and provide practical day-to-day guidance to business teams regarding insurance, claims, contractual risk allocation, and risk mitigation issues.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Purchasing, Construction, Land, Operations, and other teams on contractual risk transfer and third-party risk management matters, including indemnity, insurance requirements, certificates of insurance, and trade partner, vendor, consultant, and service-provider compliance.
  • Support risk management needs across Stanley Martin Holdings and its affiliates, including homebuilding, mortgage, title, land development, acquisitions, joint ventures, new markets, new business initiatives, and other strategic projects.
  • Support risk management reporting, governance, and coordination processes associated with the Companyโ€™s ownership by a Japanese parent company, including driving the agenda for the Risk Management Committee and preparing reports for internal leadership and parent-company stakeholders.
  • Supervise, develop, and provide guidance to the existing risk management employee, while helping define future staffing, roles, responsibilities, and capabilities needed for the department.
  • Design, implement, and update comprehensive company-wide compliance frameworks and operational policies.
  • Oversee and conduct risk-based compliance testing, internal audits, and root-cause analyses to identify and resolve operational discrepancies.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees on regulatory requirements.
  • Handle special projects assigned by the Chief Legal Officer.
  • Represent the company professionally in all internal and external interactions and communications.
  • Adhere to safety standards and help promote a safe working environment.
  • Adhere to and promote the Mission, Vision, and Values of Stanley Martin.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in risk management, business administration, finance, accounting, insurance, legal studies, construction management, or a related field
  • 7-10+ years of relevant experience in risk management, insurance, claims, construction, real estate development, homebuilding, legal operations, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of and experience with commercial insurance programs, claims administration, captive insurance structures, and risk management processes, including contractual risk transfer, certificate of insurance tracking, subcontractor/vendor insurance compliance, or construction-related insurance programs
  • ARM, CRM, CPCU, AIC, CSP, CCEP, or other relevant professional designation preferred
  • Experience in the real estate industry preferred
  • Office-based position, with a strong preference for an individual based in Northern Virginia who can work in the Reston, Virginia, corporate office
  • Some travel expected for conferences and meetings and to visit job sites and remote offices
