About the Role:

The Mining Engineer - Geotechnical Senior plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, stability, and efficiency of mining operations through expert geotechnical analysis and engineering. This position involves leading the design, implementation, and monitoring of ground control measures to mitigate risks associated with rock mechanics and soil behavior in mining environments. The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions that optimize mine design while adhering to regulatory and environmental standards. The senior engineer will also be responsible for mentoring junior engineers and providing technical guidance to support continuous improvement in geotechnical practices. Ultimately, this position ensures that mining activities are conducted safely, sustainably, and cost-effectively, protecting both personnel and assets.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in geotechnical engineering within the mining industry.
  • Strong knowledge of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to produce detailed technical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sound analytical skills and practical application of geotechnical knowledge
  • High level of experience in numerical modelling and geotechnical database management
  • Working knowledge of various mining methods, both surface and underground (e.g. longhole open stoping, air leg stoping, jumbo stoping and underground backfill systems)
  • Exposure to mine auditing and assessment techniques
  • Computer literacy – Deswik Design Software, Map3D Numerical Modelling Software, Rocscience Software Suite Phase2 and 3, Dips & Unwedge and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels
  • Proven expertise in rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and ground control design for both surface and underground mining.
  • Strong professional report writing skills
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain or exceed best industry practice in geotechnical management systems
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices
  • Awareness of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act & Regulations and their application to underground mining operations
  • Experience in operational projects including scoping, quality and cost management

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed geotechnical investigations and analyses to assess ground conditions and stability risks in mining operations.
  • Design and implement ground control systems including slope stability, pit wall design, and underground support structures.
  • Monitor and evaluate geotechnical instrumentation data to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with mine planners, environmental specialists, and safety teams to integrate geotechnical considerations into overall mine design and operation plans.
  • Prepare technical reports, risk assessments, and regulatory documentation to support compliance and stakeholder communication.
  • Lead and mentor junior geotechnical engineers and technicians, fostering professional development and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay current with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes related to geotechnical engineering in mining.

The required skills are applied daily to analyze complex geological data and develop engineering solutions that ensure mine stability and safety. Proficiency in geotechnical software enables the engineer to model ground behavior and predict potential failure mechanisms accurately. Strong communication skills are essential for preparing comprehensive reports and collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams and regulatory bodies. Leadership and mentoring skills help in guiding junior staff and fostering a culture of safety and technical excellence. Preferred skills such as advanced degrees and professional certifications enhance the engineer’s ability to manage large projects and navigate regulatory requirements efficiently.
