A Director at a fintech startup oversees key business operations, sets strategic goals, and leads teams to drive growth and innovation in financial technology solutions. Their responsibilities often include managing product development, building partnerships, ensuring regulatory compliance, and securing funding. Directors also play a crucial role in shaping company culture and aligning the startup’s vision with market opportunities. They work closely with other executives and stakeholders to ensure the company remains competitive and scalable. The role requires strong leadership, industry knowledge, and an ability to adapt to rapidly changing trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director at a fintech startup?

To excel as a Director at a Fintech Startup, you need strong leadership abilities, deep knowledge of financial services, strategic planning expertise, and typically an advanced degree in business, finance, or technology. Familiarity with fintech platforms, regulatory compliance systems, data analytics tools, and sometimes certifications like CFA or PMP are valuable. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills set outstanding directors apart by enabling effective team management and stakeholder engagement. These competencies are vital for navigating rapid industry changes, driving innovation, and ensuring the startup's growth and regulatory adherence.

Job description

Fliff is the arena for high-upside play. We are dismantling the paywalls of legacy sportsbooks and reimagining the economics of social games to pioneer the next generation of rewards-driven entertainment spanning sports, casino, predictions, collectibles, and beyond.
Powered by a frictionless freemium architecture, Fliff democratizes access and gives millions of players nationwide a real stake, real thrill, and real upside. By combining authentic competitive drive with instant rewards and interactive games, we are turning passive sports fans and casual gamers into active, empowered participants - unlocking the player in everyone.

Fliff also offers Fliff Pick'Em, a peer-to-peer daily fantasy sports ("DFS") contest format that allows players to compete against each other by building lineups of athletes and selecting whether or not those athletes will outperform or underperform statistical projections for real-world sporting events. Fliff Pick'Em provides another vertical for our players to engage with the games they enjoy.

The Role:

We are seeking an experienced Director of Compliance to join our Legal Team and help design, implement, and optimize our compliance function across all Fliff verticals. As Fliff expands its product ecosystem, this role will oversee our core gaming compliance and also lead compliance strategies for our upcoming prediction market initiatives (CFTC frameworks) and robust consumer protection standards (FTC compliance).

This role will report to our Head of Legal and Regulatory Affairs and will serve as Fliff's senior compliance lead. You will have direct responsibility for regulator engagement and compliance strategy.

What You'll Own:
Compliance & Risk Program Leadership
  • Develop, implement, and improve the company's compliance program across gaming, social sportsbook, DFS, and prediction market verticals

  • Own the regulatory, market, and credit risk profiles required for prediction market licensing

  • Draft, maintain, and improve compliance policies, procedures, internal controls, rulebooks, and terms and conditions

Lead CFTC & Prediction Market Compliance
  • Own our  CFTC compliance strategy -  Structure event contracts and prediction market products, including product structuring, contract terms, and market integrity rules

  • Lead  regulatory registrations, applications, and filings under FCM frameworks and prepare the organization for the ongoing obligations that accompany them

  • Ensure compliance with the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA), CFTC, and NFA rules governing event-based products

FTC, Privacy & Consumer Protection
  • Ensure all consumer-facing initiatives, marketing campaigns, disclosures, and user acquisition strategies comply with FTC guidelines and consumer protection standards

  • Review marketing, advertising, and educational materials for compliance with both FTC standards and applicable CFTC/NFA advertising rules

  • Oversee privacy compliance, including data protection, security practices, and user consent frameworks alongside product teams

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for state gaming authorities, federal regulators (CFTC and FTC), and self-regulatory organizations

  • Manage regulatory filings, licensing renewals, independent audits, and regulatory examinations

  • Monitor, interpret, and proactively translate shifting federal and state laws impacting all Fliff verticals

  • Oversee and  improve Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Counter-Financing of Terrorism (CFT), fraud prevention, and Know Your Customer (KYC) programs

  • Partner with internal security and operations teams to investigate suspicious activity, detect market manipulation, and manage high-level escalations

Work across the company
  • Support contracting and commercial work without slowing it down

  • Partner closely with Legal, Risk, Product, Engineering, Operations, Payments, Marketing, and Finance teams to build compliant operations under federal and state frameworks

What We're Looking For:
Minimum Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience in compliance, legal, or regulatory roles within gaming, fintech, prediction markets, or derivatives and commodities trading

  • Active Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school and an active license to practice law in at least one United States jurisdiction preferred

  • Possess direct experience or a strong working knowledge of the Commodity Exchange Act, CFTC and NFA rules, and event contract or prediction market regulatory frameworks

  • Demonstrate proven experience navigating FTC guidelines, advertising compliance, and consumer protection laws in digital consumer verticals

  • Experience building, standing up, or maintaining a compliance program in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment with limited precedent

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with risk management functions, specifically a Head of Risk, to segment and conquer complex compliance and operational hazards

  • Strong analytical and project management skills, with the ability to translate highly complex federal regulations into practical, actionable guidance for product and business teams

  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and thrive in an evolving regulatory environment

Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation package, including base salary, benefits, and equity. The annual salary for this role ranges from $220,000 - $260,000 depending on experience and background.
  • Unlimited/Flexible paid time off.

  • Health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and generous parental leave.

  • Employee-sponsored 401(k).

Perks:

  • $500 work-from-home stipend + Equipment & Accessories.

  • Work Remotely.

  • Opportunity for professional development in a dynamic, global setting.

  • A supportive, collaborative, and knowledge-driven workplace. An engaging and challenging role with the freedom to innovate and develop effective solutions.
