Job description

Job Description:
At Chewy, it is our mission to become the most trusted and convenient online destination for pet parents and our partners vets and service providers alike. Our success is measured by the happiness of the people and pets we serve, not simply by the amount of pet supplies we deliver. That's why we continue to think of outside-the-Chewy-box ways to delight, surprise, and thank our loyal pet lovers!
Our Opportunity:
Chewy is seeking a Director, Finance - Ads and Discovery to lead finance support for Chewy's Ad Network (i.e. Chewy Ads) as well as the Search and Discovery teams. This is a highly visible role responsible for shaping how we invest, measure success, and drive accountability across two critical growth areas of the business. This role will partner directly with the VP of Chewy Ads and Search and Discovery to define the financial targets, investment strategy, operating mechanisms, and performance metrics required to implement the long-term vision. In the Ads organization, this role will lead finance for the transformation of Chewy Ads from a highly successful onsite and offsite retail advertising business into a full-fledged pet-centered Retail Media Network. This requires a finance leader with direct experience in digital advertising, retail media, or ads monetization - including a strong understanding of the business of buying and selling ads, pricing, advertiser return on investment, campaign performance, inventory monetization, and the tradeoffs involved in scaling an advertising business.
To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate must be able to earn trust across product, engineering, finance, commercial and accounting partners using data to inform their recommendations and analyses. The candidate will be organized, detailed orientated, and an auditor of our operations through a financial lens. They will be an owner, raising their hand to investigate risks/opportunities especially when ownership is ambiguous or unclear.
Candidates must bring strong analytical and financial modeling leadership in a big data environment, with direct exposure to advertising, retail media, digital monetization, or paid media business models. They should understand how advertising businesses grow, how investment decisions are made, and how performance is measured across revenue, margin, advertiser outcomes, customer experience, and long-term enterprise value. They show a drive to understand operational metrics and can clearly express their point of view to executives for long-term business decisions.
A strong fit for this role will demonstrate outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal. They will work at depth and think broadly about business direction and investments. This role must balance many competing priorities simultaneously, improve and transform processes and display strong leadership and development skills both with direct reports and across the broader organization. Your primary business partners are mostly located on the West Coast with many at Chewy's Hub in Seattle, WA.
What You'll Do
  • Own overall financial planning, reporting, and budgeting for Chewy's Advertising, Search and Discovery businesses
  • Lead finance partnership for Chewy Ads, including onsite and offsite advertising, retail media network expansion, ads monetization, pricing, investment decisions, and performance measurement.
  • Develop and maintain reporting mechanisms to measure and provide transparency into business performance to ensure financial plans are achieved.
  • Be a principal participant in the creation and delivery of Monthly and Quarterly Business reviews.
  • Evaluate the financial performance of advertising initiatives, including revenue growth, margin, advertiser return on investment, campaign performance, inventory monetization, and long-term scalability.
  • Size, analyze and measure durable financial impact of roadmap initiatives to improve customer conversion, retention, acquisition or lifetime value.
  • Recognize and propose analysis influencing business partners and finance leaders to drive positive change in the business
  • Influence cross-functional leaders to drive data-informed decisions and improve financial outcomes
  • Drive prioritization across competing initiatives to ensure focus on highest-impact investments
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Lead and develop a high-impact team, including hiring and coaching

What You'll Need
  • 12+ years in finance related roles with progressively increasing levels of responsibility -OR MBA or advanced business degree and 9 years of experience.
  • Experience in budgeting forecasting, and variance analysis ideally in a Digital Advertising or Retail Media Network capacity
  • Direct experience supporting digital marketing, retail media, ads monetization, paid media, AdTech, or a similar advertising-based business model is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate complex financial concepts concisely to partners across job levels and functions including the CEO and Senior Leadership Team.
  • History of using data and analytics to drive business decisions
  • Strong understanding of the business mechanics of advertising, including how ads are bought and sold, how campaigns are measured, how pricing and inventory monetization work, and how advertising investments translate into revenue, margin, and advertiser/customer outcomes
  • Results-orientated with a hands-on approach; comfortable in both scaling and established environments
  • Demonstrated ability to self-start and thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced entrepreneurial environments where decisions need to be made quickly with imperfect data
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and trust with partners within and outside your direct organization.
  • Relentless curiosity and desire to learn and challenge yourself in functional areas you might not be familiar with.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and financial reporting software (Hyperion preferred)
  • Experience leading and building high-performing teams

Bonus
  • MBA or advanced business degree
  • Experience in Digital Advertising and ecommerce measurement methodologies (A/B and holdouts)
  • Familiarity with e-commerce business models, Advertising, or product business support preferred.
  • Experience with SQL, Tableau, and Hyperion or other financial systems software

The base salary range for this role is $186,500 - $297,500.00.
  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location.
