Full-time
Posted 11 days ago
Job description
University High School (UHS) is seeking an innovative, collaborative, and student-centered leader to launch and direct our new Sports Performance & Recovery Center (SPARC), a premier facility dedicated to helping students become healthier, stronger, faster, and more resilient.
This is more than a strength and conditioning position. It is an opportunity to build a comprehensive sports performance and wellness program from the ground up and become a key leader within one of the Bay Area's premier independent school athletic departments.
The Director of Sports Performance & Wellness will lead a program that serves not only our athletic teams, but the entire University High School community. Working closely with coaches, the Physical Education Department, Athletic Training staff, and faculty and staff, this individual will develop innovative programming that enhances athletic performance, promotes lifelong wellness, supports injury prevention and recovery, and inspires students to reach their full potential.
At University High School, we believe athletics are an extension of the educational experience. We are looking for an educator and mentor who understands that success is measured not only by athletic achievement, but by the confidence, discipline, resilience, and healthy habits students develop along the way.
About University High School
Founded in 1975, University High School is a nationally recognized independent school serving approximately 540 students in grades 9-12 in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood.
Our athletics program emphasizes excellence, leadership, integrity, and belonging. The opening of the Sports Performance & Recovery Center represents a significant investment in the health, development, and well-being of every member of our school community.
University High School is guided by five core values:
- Inquiry
- Care
- Integrity
- Agency
- Interconnection
These values shape how we teach, coach, collaborate, and lead.
Position Responsibilities:
- Build and lead a comprehensive sports performance and wellness program serving the entire school community.
- Design and implement age-appropriate strength, speed, power, mobility, recovery, and injury prevention programs grounded in Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD) principles.
- Oversee the daily operation of the Sports Performance & Recovery Center (SPARC), ensuring a safe, organized, welcoming, and high-performing environment.
- Partner with athletic coaches to align performance programming with team goals and seasonal demands.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Trainer to support injury prevention, rehabilitation, and return-to-play programming.
- Partner with the Physical Education Director to develop innovative movement, fitness, and wellness programming that enhances the educational experience for all students.
- Design and deliver fitness and wellness opportunities for faculty and staff that promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen community wellness.
- Teach proper movement mechanics, lifting technique, recovery strategies, and lifelong training habits.
- Track athlete development and utilize performance data to evaluate progress and continually improve programming.
- Manage facility operations, equipment maintenance, safety protocols, scheduling, inventory, and daily logistics.
- Educate and support coaches on best practices in sports performance, athlete development, workload management, and recovery.
- Foster a culture built on accountability, inclusion, effort, curiosity, resilience, and continuous improvement.
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related field
- CSCS (NSCA) or CSCCa certification
- Current CPR/AED certification
- Experience designing and implementing strength and conditioning or sports performance programs
- Master's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related field
- Experience working with high school or collegiate athletes
- Experience managing a sports performance facility
- Experience implementing Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD) models
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is an outstanding teacher, coach, and relationship-builder who inspires others through knowledge, energy, and authenticity.
They understand that developing athletes begins with developing people. They create an environment where students feel challenged, supported, and motivated to pursue excellence while learning habits that promote lifelong health and wellness.
This individual is equally comfortable leading a team training session, collaborating with faculty, mentoring coaches, analyzing performance data, or helping a student master their first squat. They are excited by the opportunity to build a program that will become a defining part of the University High School experience.
Why University High School?
This is a rare opportunity to build a signature program from the ground up.
As the inaugural Director of Sports Performance & Wellness, you will help shape the vision of a brand-new Sports Performance & Recovery Center while collaborating with exceptional educators, coaches, athletic trainers, and school leaders who believe athletics are one of the most powerful classrooms on campus.
Your leadership will influence every athletic program, support the Physical Education curriculum, expand wellness opportunities for students, faculty and staff, and help create a culture where every member of the University High School community has the opportunity to Belong. Build. Become.
Compensation
The anticipated salary range is $90,000-$105,000, commensurate with experience, certifications, and qualifications.
