  • Maintains and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operation and supports construction activities as needed.


Job description

Nature of Work:

This is skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of moderately complex and heavy equipment, which also requires the performance of manual labor.

Work involves the operation of vehicles and equipment used in construction and maintenance projects, and to transport materials and personnel to and from work sites.  Work also involves the use of power tools in preparing areas for construction.  Work requires not only the safe and skilled operation of equipment but also maintains equipment.  Work is performed under close supervision with verbal and written instructions issued regularly.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Operates chain saw in clearing rights-of-way.

Operates a dump truck (under 36,000 G.V.W.) and pulls equipment trailers when necessary.

Responds to building maintenance calls.

Assists in work such as building stormwater catch basins, building sidewalks, plumbing, electrical, and other construction jobs as needed.

Operates bush hog, bobcat, pipe saws, boring tools, and any other related heavy equipment as required to assist in a variety of construction and maintenance projects.

Assists in construction projects.

Maintains road quality by repairing with gravel and asphalt.

Performs routine maintenance on all equipment to ensure proper operation.

Performs heavy manual labor as necessary.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance techniques of moderately complex equipment.

Knowledge of the operation and application of power tools and other various tools.

Good knowledge of state and local road safety rules and regulations.

Skill in operation of equipment in close proximity to utility lines.

Skill in the basic concepts of general construction principles.

Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to communicate using a two (2) way radio.

Ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

Ability to work in inclement weather.

Ability to operate manual transmission and clutch vehicles.

Ability to climb ladders and withstand heights.

Ability to work in confined spaces.

Ability to tolerate environments containing dust and dirt.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.

Good knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

Skill in assembling materials and constructing rough products.

Skill in recognizing hazardous waste.

Ability to perform as part of a crew of workers.

Ability to safely operate light construction equipment.

Ability to negotiate uneven terrain, unassisted, while carrying objects up to fifty (50) pounds.

Ability to maneuver in low clearance areas.

Ability to operate a standard equipped vehicle.

Education and Experience:

Completion of high school course or GED.

Experience in similar manual work.

Experience in more than one specialized commercial construction trade.

Experience in the operation of various public works equipment including, but not limited to, bobcat, bush hog, and tractors as required to assist in a variety of construction and maintenance projects.

Experience in pressurized potable water and sewer piping plumbing.

Experience in the operation of construction equipment in close proximity to roadways and utilities.

Completion of a DOT flagger's course, or obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.

Possession of a valid Georgia driver's license.

An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
