Director Bioconjugation Scientist information

What does a director bioconjugation scientist do?

A Director Bioconjugation Scientist leads teams responsible for developing and optimizing techniques that chemically link biological molecules, such as antibodies, to other compounds like drugs or imaging agents. This role involves overseeing research projects, designing experimental strategies, and ensuring products meet regulatory standards. Directors in this field also collaborate with cross-functional teams, manage budgets, and guide scientific strategy to advance therapeutic or diagnostic programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director bioconjugation scientist?

To thrive as a Director Bioconjugation Scientist, you need deep expertise in chemistry, bioconjugation technologies, and drug development, typically backed by a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field and significant industry experience. Familiarity with analytical tools (like HPLC, mass spectrometry), regulatory documentation, and project management software is essential. Outstanding leadership, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills set top candidates apart in this position. These competencies drive innovation, ensure rigorous scientific standards, and foster effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by a director bioconjugation scientist when leading cross-functional teams in drug development projects?

A Director Bioconjugation Scientist often navigates challenges such as aligning scientific objectives with project timelines, managing resource allocation, and ensuring clear communication between research, analytical, and manufacturing teams. Balancing the technical complexities of bioconjugation chemistry with regulatory requirements and scalability can also be demanding. Successful directors foster collaboration across departments, mitigate risks early, and adapt strategies based on evolving project needs to drive innovative therapeutics toward clinical development.

Job description

At Regeneron, we use science and innovation to develop life-changing medicines for people with serious diseases. We are seeking a Process Development Engineer III to join our Preclinical Manufacturing & Process Development (PMPD) organization's Synthetic and Bioconjugation Scale-up Technologies (SBST) Analytics group, on-site in Tarrytown, NY. In this role, you will serve as the analytical lead to develop fit-for-purpose analytical methods, transfer methods, and provide troubleshooting support to advance a diverse bioconjugate pipeline.

This position offers the opportunity to lead and implement analytical deliverables, working closely with bioconjugation teams and internal/external collaborators (CDMOs) to advance bioconjugate programs from development to commercialization.

When & where:
  • Shift Requirements: Full-time, standard business hours
  • Location: On-site in Tarrytown, NY
  • Flexibility & travel: Minimal to no travel; on-site presence required to support lab operations and collaboration with internal/external CDMO partners
What you'll do:
  • Independently design and execute analytical testing, method development, and characterization to enable bioconjugate process development
  • Serve as the subject matter expert to lead and design analytical deliverables: robust method development, method transfer to internal/external receiving labs, training, and troubleshooting to move programs forward
  • Connect, interpret, and communicate complex results into clear, actionable next steps for technical and non-technical audiences to drive timely decisions
  • Author high-quality documentation (e.g., procedures, development and characterization reports, ELN entries) in a timely manner to support program timelines
  • Drive, build, and improve business workflows: documentation standardization, data digitization, and sample management
  • Maintain compliance with lab and environmental safety requirements and promote a safe lab environment
  • Proactively scout, evaluate, and implement new or improved technologies for high-throughput analytics and real-time decision-making
  • Lead equipment upkeep and troubleshooting, maintain an organized workspace, and proactively plan for lab resources
  • Mentor and support peers and junior team members (direct and/or indirect via matrix)
The environment and physical rhythms of this role:
  • This is a hands-on, on-site laboratory role serving as analytical lead across bioconjugate programs, requiring close collaboration with internal teams and external CDMO partners and comfort navigating complex, ambiguous problems.
  • Flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment while independently driving projects forward is required.

  • Hands-on experience transferring methods to internal/external labs, and troubleshooting
  • Demonstrated experience serving as an analytical lead for bioconjugate programs, collaborating effectively with internal teams and external CDMOs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present data clearly to diverse audiences
  • Experience drafting analytical methods, development, and characterization reports to support regulatory filing
