Director Bioconjugation Scientist information

What does a Director Bioconjugation Scientist do?

A Director Bioconjugation Scientist leads teams responsible for developing and optimizing techniques that chemically link biological molecules, such as antibodies, to other compounds like drugs or imaging agents. This role involves overseeing research projects, designing experimental strategies, and ensuring products meet regulatory standards. Directors in this field also collaborate with cross-functional teams, manage budgets, and guide scientific strategy to advance therapeutic or diagnostic programs.

What are some typical challenges faced by a Director Bioconjugation Scientist when leading cross-functional teams in drug development projects?

A Director Bioconjugation Scientist often navigates challenges such as aligning scientific objectives with project timelines, managing resource allocation, and ensuring clear communication between research, analytical, and manufacturing teams. Balancing the technical complexities of bioconjugation chemistry with regulatory requirements and scalability can also be demanding. Successful directors foster collaboration across departments, mitigate risks early, and adapt strategies based on evolving project needs to drive innovative therapeutics toward clinical development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director Bioconjugation Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director Bioconjugation Scientist, you need deep expertise in chemistry, bioconjugation technologies, and drug development, typically backed by a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field and significant industry experience. Familiarity with analytical tools (like HPLC, mass spectrometry), regulatory documentation, and project management software is essential. Outstanding leadership, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills set top candidates apart in this position. These competencies drive innovation, ensure rigorous scientific standards, and foster effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, BIOCONJUGATION

Sutro Biopharma is seeking an innovative and highly motivated Associate Director to join the Protein Biochemistry Group. The successful candidate will serve as a scientific leader in bioconjugation and analytical characterization of conjugates, supporting the discovery and development of next-generation of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs).

This role will be responsible for driving the development, optimization, and implementation of conjugation technologies and analytical workflows, including mass spectrometry-based characterization of proteins and bioconjugates. The Associate Director will be a member of cross-functional efforts to design, characterize, and advance novel conjugates, and contribute to strategic decisions that impact pipeline and platform development.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the conjugation team responsible for the development and optimization of site-specific bioconjugation of next-generation ADCs.
  • Conjugate and characterize ADCs to support the early-stage research pipeline.
  • Develop analytical strategies to interrogate conjugation efficiency and biophysical properties of ADCs
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to drive innovation in conjugation chemistry and evaluate emerging technologies to enhance Sutro's therapeutic platforms.
  • Collaborate with teams in research and tech ops groups to progress molecules from early leads to early development.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry or a related discipline with 8+ years of industry experience
  • Experience developing and troubleshooting bioconjugation methods is required. Experience working with ADCs or antibody fragments is preferred.
  • Proficiency in analytical methods for characterization of proteins and bioconjugates utilizing HPLC (SEC, HIC, RP, and IEX), UV-Vis, DLS, SDS-PAGE, CE, and complementary biophysical techniques.
  • Familiarity with various research-scale affinity methods for protein purification, including desalting, SEC, IMAC, protein A, protein G. Experience with TFF is a plus
  • Experience with recombinant protein expression in E. coli and/or cell-free protein synthesis systems is a plus
