JOB TITLE: Bilingual/ ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher
Spanish/Arabic Preferred
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred: Illinois Professional Educator License
ESL Endorsement and Bilingual Endorsement
Will consider: Educator License with Stipulations (Transitional Bilingual)
Background in Language Arts
Fluency in specified language.
Experiences in intercultural mediation.
SUMMARY: The Bilingual/ ESL teacher shall provide instruction to help potentially English proficient students develop cognitive, academic language abilities in order to function at grade level in monolingual English classes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identifies and assesses academic level, language proficiency level, cultural history and linguistic history of students who may be/are eligible for bilingual services;
  • Makes recommendations as to the best placement within the bilingual program (full or part time);
    Provides direct bilingual and English-As-A-Second-Language (ESL) instruction to students;
  • Designs lessons and coordinates instruction provided by bilingual instructional aides to students in the bilingual class;
  • Participates in the Child Study Team meetings and staffings of potentially English proficient students.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy.
  • Provides learning experiences that develop the basic communication skills, using tape recorders and other electronic equipment as appropriate.
  • Provides individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Evaluates each pupil's progress and communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress;
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems;
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
