Description
Manager, Dynamic Studies Westwood Professional Services, Inc is hiring a Manager of Dynamic Studies to join our team! The Manager of Dynamic Studies leads the execution and technical oversight of power system dynamic and EMT studies for renewable generation facilities, including solar, wind, and energy storage projects. This role is responsible for developing and managing a team of engineers performing positive-sequence and electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, ensuring technical excellence, consistency, and timely project delivery.
Responsibilities:
  • Grow, lead and manage a team of engineers performing dynamic and EMT studies for renewable energy projects.
  • Provide technical oversight and QA/QC for all dynamic modeling and EMT analysis deliverables.
  • Develop and validate power system models (in positive-sequence and EMT software packages) for renewable facilities, including solar, wind, and energy storage systems.
  • Perform and oversee EMT studies in PSCAD including, but not limited to, TOV, TRV, transformer energization and in-rush, and capacitor bank switching studies.
  • Support project developers and owners through the interconnection process by interconnection modeling (both positive sequence and EMT) and assisting with completing interconnection applications for various RTOs (CAISO, NYISO, MISO, ERCOT, etc.).
  • Monitor evolving ISO/RTO modeling requirements and emerging technical standards impacting inverter-based resources.
  • Establish internal modeling standards, best practices, and quality control procedures.
  • Coordinate with project managers, protection engineers, equipment vendors, and clients to ensure alignment of study scope and technical assumptions.
  • Support business development efforts by contributing to proposals, technical scoping, and client presentations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support professional development within the dynamic studies team.

Requirements
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Approximately 10 years of experience in renewable energy and/or closely related power system modeling.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field with a power systems focus.
  • Experience conducting dynamics, short circuit, load flow, and/or EMT simulations including the modeling and representation of IBRs and other power system components.
  • Experience with the resource interconnection process, modeling guidelines, and requirements for various regions throughout North America (CAISO, ERCOT, etc.).
  • Experience using power system analysis tools, specifically PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, and Aspen.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and providing technical oversight to engineers performing dynamic and EMT studies.
  • Must be detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to quality.
  • Must be a supportive team player, capable of working effectively in cross-functional teams and managing relationships with external vendors and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field with a power systems focus.
  • Experience in programming languages such as Python, R, and/or VBA.
  • Experience with DSATools (PSAT, TSAT) or other dynamic security assessment tools.
  • Experience writing or modifying PSS®E user-defined models.
  • Experience with DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Experience performing model validation and verification for dynamic and EMT models.
  • Experience performing and producing Model Quality Test (MQT) reports for projects in the MISO and/or ERCOT regions.
