Job description

Technical Developer - Apparel

At Smartwool we are looking for a Technical Developer who will transform design concepts into high‑quality, functional garments that fit well and support a wide range of outdoor activities.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and oversee the development schedule of prototypes.
  • Own fit for the selection of in‑line apparel product categories, providing fit mentorship on all advanced developments.
  • Collaborate with Designers, Merchandisers and Product Developers to facilitate smooth communication flow.
  • Drive consistent execution of fit intent and fit consistency through analysis, pattern corrections, visual adjustments, communication, block patterns and training/mentorship.
  • Provide fit comments on virtual and physical prototypes (including size‑run fittings) on a full range of 3D avatars, in person or on fit forms.
  • Enter fit comments into the PLM system to communicate changes to manufacturers.
  • Work with the Digital Product Creation Manager to build 3D digital assets as needed.
  • Assist in building a library of 3D fit blocks by creating fit standards, blocks and guidelines to ensure product alignment.
  • Advocate the use of 3D processes to improve efficiency and scale down calendars and budgets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support team members when workload intensity shifts.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in technical development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of apparel fit analysis, grading, construction, patternmaking, and 3D.
  • Understanding of product category, product materials and the product development lifecycle.
  • Ability to manage multiple seasonal calendars in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Deadline‑driven with a track record for delivering on time.
  • Strong organizational skills, clear and accurate verbal and written communication to offshore vendors, manufacturers and VF sourcing office.
  • Ability to establish strong relationships and create trust with cross‑functional teams.
  • Growth mindset and enthusiasm for learning new tools, problem‑solving and taking feedback into action.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office, Adobe Illustrator, PLM programs and 3D prototype software.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy fit forms and stand for long periods.
  • Location: in‑office; ability to travel domestically and overseas as needed.
Preferred Skills
  • Wool experience.
  • Knowledge of the Flex PLM system.

Hiring range: $77,760.00 – $97,200.00 USD annually.
Incentive potential may include an annual incentive plan, sales incentive or commission.
