Job description

The role of the Library Assistant is to support and assist the Head of Library Services in creating a welcoming environment that encourages students and faculty to experience the joy of reading, reflection, and collaborative conversation. The Library Assistant helps to maintain the library and its collection by assisting students and staff, and implementing library programming as directed. Specific tasks are variable and can include helping students in their search for appropriate books, cataloging new books, teaching library curriculum and skills, and the creation of signs and book displays. The Library Assistant also supports library events including book fairs, author visits and other library programming.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

INSTRUCTION

  1. Teach library curriculum and skills - including instruction in the use of library materials, technology and electronic resources;
  2. Conduct library orientation for students, faculty, and staff;
  3. Support the academic program and curriculum by collaborating with faculty to plan project-based instruction, suggest supplemental resources for teachers, and provide reference services to students;
  4. Assist in training library volunteers and student library assistants.

LIBRARY OPERATIONS

  1. Create and prioritize a joyful, inviting, and orderly environment for study, reflection, and collaboration;
  2. Assist with the operation of the library facility, its physical collection, digital subscriptions, and other resources;
  3. Assist with check in/out of books and help students and faculty locate appropriate books and resources;
  4. Assist faculty desiring to schedule library time for their class(es);
  5. Assist in collection development, maintenance, and deselection;
  6. Assist with cataloging using MARC format and circulation using the automated library system;
  7. Assist with annual library inventory;
  8. Other duties as assigned by the Head of Library Services.
