What does a digital design engineer intern do?

A Digital Design Engineer Intern assists in designing, testing, and validating digital circuits and systems, often using hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog. They work under the supervision of experienced engineers to develop, simulate, and debug digital components such as processors, memory units, or communication interfaces. Responsibilities may also include documenting designs, running test benches, and collaborating with teams to implement digital solutions. This internship helps students gain practical experience in digital electronics and design methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital design engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Design Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, familiarity with hardware description languages (such as Verilog or VHDL), and progress toward a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Proficiency in simulation tools like ModelSim, FPGA development environments, and PCB design software is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help interns excel in collaborative project settings. These skills and qualities are crucial for designing, testing, and implementing reliable digital systems while contributing effectively to engineering teams.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a digital design engineer intern typically expect during their internship?

As a Digital Design Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as assisting with the design and verification of digital circuits, creating testbenches using hardware description languages (like Verilog or VHDL), and collaborating with senior engineers on simulation and debugging. Your day-to-day may involve participating in design reviews, documenting your work, and learning how to use industry-standard EDA tools. It's common to work closely with both hardware and software teams, providing a great opportunity to develop technical and teamwork skills while contributing to meaningful projects.

Job description

Job#: 3046042
Job Description:
Sr. Electrical Design Engineer III
Location: Redmond, Washington (Onsite)
Role Overview
Our organization is seeking two Senior Electrical Engineers, one with a digital/high-speed focus and one with a power focus. These roles involve designing advanced electronic hardware for demanding applications. The positions require end-to-end ownership of hardware design, from schematic and interface definition through to lab bring-up, validation, and manufacturing readiness.
Key Responsibilities: Digital Electrical Engineer
  • Design complex multi-layer digital PCBs, including schematic capture and component selection.
  • Define and constrain high-speed digital interfaces.
  • Manage clocking, resets, boot/configuration, and general-purpose I/O for the digital subsystem.
  • Perform pre- and post-layout signal-integrity analysis.
  • Partner with layout teams on routing dense, high-pin-count devices.
  • Lead digital bring-up, including power-on, clocking, and interface validation.
  • Debug hardware in a lab environment using high-speed instrumentation.
  • Develop and execute functional and interface test plans.
  • Support hardware, firmware, and software integration.
Key Responsibilities: Power Electrical Engineer
  • Define board power architecture, including rail planning, budgeting, and sequencing.
  • Design DC-DC converters, LDOs, and load switches, performing margin and derating analysis.
  • Design and analyze the power distribution network.
  • Manage power sequencing and supervision.
  • Lead power bring-up activities in the lab.
  • Debug and characterize power supplies using analyzers, electronic loads, and oscilloscopes.
  • Develop and execute power test plans across varying voltage and temperature conditions.
  • Contribute to design-for-manufacturability and test procedures for power circuits.
Required Qualifications
Education: A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent field is required.
Experience:
  • Demonstrated ownership of complex digital or multi-rail board design from schematic through bring-up and validation.
  • Hands-on experience in digital or power hardware design.
  • Strong fundamentals in high-speed digital design or switching and linear regulator design.
  • Hands-on lab proficiency with high-speed test equipment and a structured debug methodology.

Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB design tools such as Siemens Xpedition, Cadence, or Altium.
  • Ability to interpret datasheets and technical manuals to make correct design decisions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with processor/FPGA/SoC-based hardware design.
  • Signal-integrity or power-integrity simulation experience.
  • Experience with power delivery for FPGAs/SoCs.
  • Experience in high-reliability or harsh-environment design.
  • Knowledge of scripting for test automation (e.g., Python).
  • Experience with thermal analysis and co-design with mechanical teams.
