What is digital accessibility?

Digital accessibility refers to the design and development of digital content, websites, and applications that are usable by people with disabilities. This includes making sure that those with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with digital products. Digital accessibility often follows standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to ensure inclusivity. Prioritizing accessibility not only benefits users with disabilities but also improves the overall user experience for everyone. Many organizations are legally required to provide accessible digital content.

What are digital accessibility jobs?

Digital accessibility jobs focus on ensuring that all users can access websites, software, hardware, applications, and other digital tools regardless of disabilities or impairments. Your duties as a digital accessibility specialist involve working as a member of the user experience (UX) team to develop and test systems and applications that allow people with various disabilities to use digital products. You work with digital accessibility developers and assistive technology specialists to create tools like voice-activated controls or alternate hotkeys that the user can assign to specialized equipment. Consulting specialists help companies define accessibility issues and establish and implement strategies to improve accessibility for all users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital accessibility specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Accessibility Specialist, you need a strong understanding of accessibility standards (like WCAG), web development basics, and relevant legal requirements, often supported by certifications such as CPACC or WAS. Familiarity with assistive technologies, code validation tools, and accessibility testing platforms is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication help specialists identify issues and advocate for inclusive design. These skills ensure digital products are usable by everyone, meet compliance standards, and provide a better experience for all users.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in digital accessibility roles, and how can they be addressed?

Digital Accessibility professionals often encounter challenges such as ensuring compliance with evolving accessibility standards, integrating accessibility into fast-paced development cycles, and advocating for accessibility within cross-functional teams. Staying current with guidelines like WCAG and collaborating closely with designers, developers, and content creators can help address these challenges. Building awareness through training and clear communication often leads to more inclusive and accessible digital products.

What is the difference between Digital Accessibility vs Web Accessibility Specialist?

Digital Accessibility is a broad field focusing on making all digital content accessible, including apps, documents, and multimedia. Web Accessibility Specialists specifically focus on making websites compliant with accessibility standards. While both roles require similar certifications and work closely with development teams, Digital Accessibility covers a wider range of digital content, whereas Web Accessibility Specialists concentrate on websites.

Job Description

As a Digital Retouching Specialist at Cricut, you'll bring our visual stories to life through expert retouching, compositing, color grading, and digital image creation. Working closely with photographers, producers, art directors, and creative teams, you'll transform raw photography into polished, customer-centric imagery that inspires customers to think, "Cricut is for me," while showcasing the quality and creativity of our products.

You'll be responsible for retouching lifestyle and product photography, creating seamless composites, extending environments, maintaining color consistency, and preparing final assets for multiple marketing channels. You'll also embrace emerging AI-powered creative tools to enhance efficiency and expand creative possibilities while maintaining the craftsmanship and authenticity that define the Cricut brand.

The ideal candidate combines exceptional technical expertise with a strong artistic eye, outstanding attention to detail, and the ability to manage a high volume of work while consistently delivering beautiful, production-ready imagery.

A portfolio is required. Before-and-after examples demonstrating your retouching and compositing work are strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Retouch, composite, color grade, and prepare high-quality lifestyle and product photography for digital, print, retail, packaging, and marketing campaigns.

  • Create seamless composites, set extensions, object replacements, and other advanced image manipulations while maintaining a natural, believable final image.

  • Leverage AI-assisted creative tools alongside traditional retouching techniques to improve efficiency, solve creative challenges, and enhance image quality while maintaining brand standards.

  • Collaborate closely with photographers, Art Directors, producers, and other creative partners to understand creative intent, cropping requirements, and final deliverables.

  • Manage image workflows including RAW processing, proofing, feedback implementation, asset organization, keywording, and delivery through Cricut's digital asset management system.

  • Maintain consistency across color, lighting, composition, and photographic style while helping evolve Cricut's visual standards.

  • Partner with freelance retouchers and external creative partners as needed to ensure quality and consistency.

Qualifications
  • Associate's degree (A.A.S.) or higher in Photography, Digital Media, Graphic Design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • 3+ years of professional retouching experience in a commercial photography, creative agency, or in-house brand environment.

  • Exceptional portfolio demonstrating advanced retouching, compositing, color grading, and image manipulation across lifestyle and product photography.

  • Expert proficiency in Adobe Photoshop with extensive experience in Adobe Lightroom and Camera RAW workflows.

  • Demonstrated ability to create seamless composites while matching lighting, perspective, color, texture, and photographic style.

  • Experience using AI-assisted creative tools as part of a professional retouching workflow, or a demonstrated curiosity and willingness to adopt emerging technologies responsibly.

  • Strong understanding of non-destructive editing workflows, layer organization, color management, file preparation, and output for multiple channels.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining exceptional attention to detail and meeting deadlines.

  • Collaborative, adaptable, and comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback in a fast-paced creative environment.

  • Experience working with premium consumer brands and high-end product photography is strongly preferred.
