What does a diagnostic imaging manager do?

As a diagnostic imaging manager, your job is to oversee the delivery of radiologic services, such as MRI scans. This is not a medical role, and you may have little or no direct interaction with patients. Instead, diagnostic managers have duties and responsibilities like preparing cost estimates, negotiating with outside vendors, training staff members, and managing payroll. Diagnostic imaging managers also help ensure that all procedures and policies at a given office meet accreditation standards. Some details of this job depend on the size of your clinic and the number of subordinates you oversee. Diagnostic imaging managers usually work regular hours, but you may work unusual shifts if your facility offers 24/7 services.

What does a diagnostic imaging manager do?

A Diagnostic Imaging Manager oversees the daily operations of medical imaging departments, such as radiology, MRI, CT, and ultrasound. They are responsible for managing staff, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, maintaining equipment, and optimizing workflow for accurate and timely patient imaging. Additionally, they collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to support patient diagnosis and treatment. Their role also includes budgeting, staff training, and implementing new imaging technologies or protocols to improve patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a diagnostic imaging manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Diagnostic Imaging Manager, you need a solid background in radiologic technology, healthcare administration, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a bachelor's degree and relevant certifications like ARRT. Familiarity with imaging modalities (such as CT, MRI, and X-ray), PACS systems, and quality assurance tools is expected. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage staff effectively and ensure patient-centered operations. These competencies are crucial for maintaining high standards of care, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing department performance.

How does a diagnostic imaging manager typically collaborate with radiologists and technologists to ensure efficient workflow?

A Diagnostic Imaging Manager works closely with both radiologists and technologists to coordinate daily operations, manage scheduling, and ensure adherence to imaging protocols. They facilitate regular communication between team members, address workflow bottlenecks, and implement quality assurance initiatives. By fostering a collaborative environment, the manager helps maintain high standards of patient care, optimizes equipment utilization, and supports ongoing staff education. This role often involves balancing clinical needs with administrative tasks to achieve departmental goals.

An outstanding opportunity is available for an experienced Imaging/Radiology Manager to join a highly respected hospital organization in the Seattle area. This is a key operational leadership position overseeing a large, multidisciplinary imaging team within a complex, hospital-based environment.

We are seeking a proven imaging leader who has progressed beyond supervisory responsibilities and has direct experience managing employees, conducting performance evaluations, hiring and terminating staff, and driving departmental performance.

The successful candidate will oversee approximately 40 employees across multiple imaging modalities and work closely with senior imaging leadership to advance clinical quality, operational efficiency, employee engagement, and exceptional patient care.

Position Overview

The Imaging/Radiology Manager provides day-to-day operational and people leadership for a multidisciplinary diagnostic imaging department. This leader will be responsible for staffing, performance management, regulatory compliance, quality, productivity, employee development, and continuous improvement.

This position operates within a union environment and requires a leader who can successfully manage a diverse workforce while building strong relationships with staff, physicians, senior leadership, and other clinical departments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide operational and administrative leadership for approximately 40 imaging employees across multiple modalities.

  • Support continuous process improvement initiatives designed to improve efficiency, quality, and patient outcomes.
  • Partner effectively with physicians, technologists, nursing leadership, and other departments.
  • Help manage departmental resources, equipment, budgets, and financial performance.
  • Successfully lead employees within a unionized healthcare environment.
