Position Summary
BabyLiveAdvice is seeking a compassionate and experienced Maternal Health Diabetes Educator to provide virtual education and coaching to pregnant and postpartum patients, including individuals with gestational diabetes, prediabetes, Type 1 diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes.
The Diabetes Educator will help patients understand their condition and develop practical, sustainable self-management skills. Education may include nutrition, physical activity, glucose monitoring, medication adherence, risk reduction, and recognizing when clinical support is needed.
This is an education-focused role. The Diabetes Educator will not diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, adjust medication dosages, or independently interpret laboratory results. Clinical concerns must be escalated to the patient’s treating provider or the appropriate BabyLiveAdvice clinical team member.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one and small-group virtual diabetes education to pregnant and postpartum patients.
Educate patients about gestational diabetes and diabetes self-management during pregnancy and after delivery.
Assess each patient’s learning needs, goals, health literacy, cultural considerations, and barriers to care.
Develop individualized education plans based on the patient’s needs and readiness to make changes.
Teach patients how to monitor and document blood glucose readings according to instructions provided by their medical team.
Provide education regarding nutrition, meal planning, physical activity, medication adherence, and healthy lifestyle habits.
Explain the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and when the patient should contact a healthcare provider or seek urgent care.
Reinforce goals and follow up with patients to support progress and continued engagement.
Identify clinical concerns and escalate them promptly according to BabyLiveAdvice policies and established protocols.
Collaborate with BabyLiveAdvice providers, hospital teams, schedulers, and other care team members.
Document education sessions, patient goals, progress, barriers, and follow-up plans accurately and promptly.
Maintain patient privacy and comply with HIPAA, organizational policies, and applicable clinical standards.
Participate in required training, meetings, quality-improvement activities, and program development.
Required Qualifications
Current and unrestricted professional license or credential in an applicable field, such as Registered Nurse, Registered Dietitian, or another qualified diabetes education discipline.
Experience providing diabetes education, nutrition education, chronic disease coaching, or patient-centered health education.
Knowledge of diabetes self-management principles and evidence-based education practices.
Understanding of gestational diabetes and diabetes-related considerations during pregnancy and postpartum.
Ability to explain complex medical and health information in a clear, practical, and supportive manner.
Strong communication, active-listening, and motivational interviewing skills.
Ability to work independently and reliably in a remote environment.
Strong documentation, organization, and follow-up skills.
Ability to use telehealth platforms, electronic health records, video conferencing, email, and other online tools.
Commitment to serving patients from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, or CDCES, credential.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Certified Diabetes Educator background.
Experience working with pregnant or postpartum patients.
Previous experience providing gestational diabetes education.
Experience with maternal health, women’s health, obstetrics, endocrinology, nutrition, or chronic disease management.
Experience facilitating virtual group classes.
Familiarity with glucose logs, continuous glucose monitoring systems, and diabetes-related patient education tools.
Bilingual English and Spanish skills are strongly preferred.
