Is DevOps heavy coding?

DevOps engineers typically write some code to automate processes, manage infrastructure, and develop deployment pipelines, but the role also involves system administration, scripting, and collaboration. The amount of coding varies by organization, with some roles requiring extensive programming skills in languages like Python, Bash, or Go, while others focus more on automation tools and infrastructure management. Overall, DevOps combines coding with operational tasks to improve software delivery and reliability.

What is DevOps and what do DevOps engineers do?

DevOps is a set of practices that combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to shorten the software development lifecycle and deliver high-quality applications continuously. DevOps engineers collaborate with developers and IT staff to automate, integrate, and monitor processes, focusing on continuous integration, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code. Their responsibilities include managing deployment pipelines, automating infrastructure provisioning, ensuring system reliability, and facilitating communication between teams. By improving collaboration and automating workflows, DevOps engineers help organizations deliver software faster and more reliably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer, you need a solid background in software development and IT operations, typically supported by experience with automation, scripting, and cloud platforms. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and cloud services like AWS or Azure, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer), is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and communication skills set outstanding DevOps professionals apart. These competencies are crucial for streamlining development pipelines, ensuring reliable deployments, and fostering effective collaboration between development and operations teams.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior DevOps engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in automation, cloud platforms, and infrastructure management can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or large organizations. Achieving this level often requires advanced certifications, leadership roles, and a strong track record of managing complex systems.

What Is Devops?

DevOps refers to a combination of philosophies, tools, and practices that help to promote an organization's ability to deliver applications and services quickly while improving products at an increased speed over companies that use traditional software development. The increased speed assists organizations in better serving their clients and customers and therefore compete more effectively in the market. Essentially, this model puts development and operations teams together so that engineers can work through the lifecycle of an application and not feel saddled into a single function or skill set. This helps to ensure quality applications and increase development speeds.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps professionals focus on automating software development and deployment processes, and AI tools are increasingly used to enhance automation, monitoring, and decision-making. While AI changes some workflows, DevOps remains a vital role that requires skills in scripting, cloud platforms, and CI/CD tools to ensure reliable and efficient software delivery.

What are some common challenges DevOps professionals face when integrating new tools into existing workflows?

DevOps professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between new tools and legacy systems, resistance to change from team members, and ensuring proper security configurations. Successful integration requires thorough testing, clear documentation, and close collaboration with development and operations teams. Addressing these challenges can lead to smoother deployments and more efficient workflows, making adaptability and strong communication skills essential in this role.

What does a DevOps job do?

A DevOps professional is responsible for combining software development and IT operations to improve deployment frequency, reliability, and automation. They work with tools like Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes to streamline development, testing, and deployment processes, often maintaining infrastructure as code and ensuring system security and performance.

What is the difference between Devops vs System Administrator?

AspectDevopsSystem Administrator
Required credentialsCertifications like AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, LinuxCertifications like CompTIA Linux+, Microsoft Certified
Work environmentCollaborative, development-focused teams, often AgileOperational, maintenance-focused, on-premises or cloud
Employer usageTech companies, startups, cloud service providersEnterprises, data centers, IT departments

Job description

DevOps Engineer III
Scottsdale, AZ
About the Role
LodgeLink is inviting DevOps Engineer in Scottsdale to join our Engineering team to be part of the creation of the future of workforce travel. We are looking for talented individuals who enjoy learning about the latest technologies, strong problem-solving skills, and a user-focused approach.
As a team member, you will join an agile, audacious, inventive, collaborative, and dependable team with a bold and opinionated vision of how we use technology to solve business problems. You will be continuously learning and building your skillset. We emphasized developing our team members to build them into well-rounded professionals.
As part of our Infrastructure team for LodgeLink, the DevOps Engineer helps design and operate scalable, secure, and reliable platforms across our multi-cloud environments (Azure and AWS). The role works in a highly collaborative, cross-functional Agile setting to implement architectural decisions, reduce technical debt, and continuously improve our deployment and operations practices.
The DevOps Engineer understands the needs of product and engineering teams, is comfortable with both Azure and AWS, and can work with internal and external developers to design, implement, and optimize fully automated CI/CD pipelines. This role is central to a microservices, Go-based, containerized ecosystem and our observability-first mindset.
The DevOps Engineer reports to the Manager, Cloud & Reliability Engineering and is responsible for deploying product updates, identifying and resolving production issues, and maintaining the integrity and performance of our production environments.
We are looking for an experienced Azure DevOps engineer who will help our team expand our DevOps practice. You will work closely with the technology leadership team to streamline and improve our DevOps practices in the company.
Our Technology Stack
As a full-time member of our growing team, you will have the opportunity to expand our DevOps practice while supporting and evolving a modern platform built on:
  • Multi-cloud: Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Compute and containers: Azure Container Apps, AWS ECS Fargate, Docker
  • Application stack: Go microservices, gRPC/REST/GraphQL APIs, front-ends
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform / OpenTofu, cloud-agnostic patterns
  • CI/CD: Git-based workflows (e.g., GitHub/Azure DevOps pipelines), fully automated build-test-deploy pipelines
  • Automation and scripting: Go, Bash (and optionally PowerShell where needed)
  • Observability: OpenTelemetry (OTel) for metrics, logs, and traces; SigNoz as our primary observability platform
  • Datastores: MySQL, PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, plus other managed services as required

Responsibilities:
  • Design, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines to fully automate build, test, and deployment workflows across environments (dev, test, staging, production).
  • Implement and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform/OpenTofu for both Azure and AWS, following cloud-agnostic patterns where practical.
  • Build and maintain containerized workloads using Docker, Azure Container Apps, and AWS ECS Fargate, including configuration, scaling, and deployment strategies.
  • Implement proactive monitoring, logging, and alerting using OpenTelemetry and SigNoz, focusing on actionable, low-noise alerts and strong SLO/SLA alignment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive permanent fixes through automation and improved platform design.
  • Collaborate with development teams building Go microservices to define deployment standards, runtime configuration patterns, and best practices for reliability and security.
  • Create and improve automation (Bash, Go, and related tooling) to reduce toil in operations, including self-service workflows and chat/notification driven runbooks.
  • Promote changes through environments using standardized release processes, including canary/blue-green or similar strategies where appropriate.
  • Ensure security and compliance of cloud resources by implementing guardrails, least-privilege access, secrets management, and automated policy checks in CI/CD.
  • Contribute to documentation, runbooks, and onboarding materials for platform components, pipelines, and operational processes.
  • Coach and support product and engineering teams in DevOps, reliability, and observability practices.

Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering roles working with public cloud environments (Azure and/or AWS).
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines in a cloud environment, including automated builds, tests, and deployments.
  • Strong experience with containers (Docker) and at least one managed container platform (Azure Container Apps and/or AWS ECS Fargate).
  • Practical experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform or OpenTofu, including modules, remote state, and environment separation.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting/programming language used for automation, such as Bash and Go; familiarity with PowerShell is an asset.
  • Familiarity with observability practices and tools, including metrics, logs, and traces, preferably with OpenTelemetry and tools like SigNoz.
  • Understanding of site reliability engineering concepts (SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, incident management, post-incident reviews).
  • Experience planning and orchestrating production releases, including change management and rollback strategies.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams. College Diploma or University Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Please Note: This position requires satisfactory completion of a criminal records check and comprehensive Employment & Education Verification prior to employment.
