What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote DevOps Engineer, you need strong skills in software development, infrastructure management, automation, and a solid understanding of cloud platforms, often backed by a relevant degree or certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills are crucial, especially when working remotely with distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring seamless deployment, system reliability, and effective teamwork in dynamic, cloud-based environments.

How does a remote DevOps Engineer typically collaborate with development and IT teams?

As a remote DevOps Engineer, collaboration is often achieved through a mix of communication tools like Slack, Jira, and video conferencing platforms. You'll participate in regular stand-ups, planning meetings, and code reviews to stay aligned with both development and IT operations teams. Effective documentation and clear communication are essential, as you'll often troubleshoot issues or update CI/CD pipelines asynchronously. Remote DevOps Engineers also frequently use shared dashboards and monitoring tools to ensure transparency and rapid response to incidents.

Is DevOps still in demand in 2026?

DevOps engineers remain in high demand in 2026 due to the ongoing need for automation, continuous integration, and cloud infrastructure management. Skills in tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure are highly valued, and remote work opportunities continue to grow in this field.

What Is the Job of a Remote DevOps Engineer?

As a remote DevOps engineer, you help manage the development of software for use on a company network system. In this role, you work from home using the phone, email, video chat, or other methods of communication to stay in touch with other developers and users throughout the lifecycle of each product. You typically work with a team to ensure rapid and consistent development. This is a relatively new term, but in general, DevOps focuses on having operations and development engineers participate in a full-service lifecycle to help support end-users and ensure the software becomes the best possible product.

Can a DevOps engineer work remotely?

Yes, many DevOps engineers work remotely, as the role primarily involves managing infrastructure, automation, and cloud services that can be accessed online. Remote work is common in this field, especially with skills in tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms, and often requires strong communication and collaboration abilities. However, some companies may have specific on-site requirements depending on their security policies or team structure.

What are DevOps Engineers (Remote)?

DevOps Engineers (Remote) are IT professionals who collaborate with development and operations teams to automate, streamline, and improve software development and deployment processes from remote locations. They focus on integrating code, managing infrastructure, monitoring systems, and ensuring continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines are efficient and reliable. Working remotely, they use cloud-based tools and platforms to manage servers, deploy applications, and maintain high system reliability without being physically present in an office. Their role is crucial in accelerating development cycles, reducing errors, and ensuring seamless collaboration between dispersed teams.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps engineers focus on automating and integrating development and operations processes, and AI tools are increasingly used to enhance automation, monitoring, and decision-making. While AI changes some workflows, the role of DevOps remains vital for managing infrastructure, continuous integration, and deployment in modern software development.

How to Become a Remote DevOps Engineer

To become a remote DevOps engineer, you typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in software engineering, information technology, or computer science and relevant work experience. You must also have familiarity with coding and IT protocols, as well as knowledge of infrastructure code, agile workflow processes, and the various roles that software and IT play in the product life cycle. Because this is a work from home position, you need to have strong time management skills, the ability to work independently, and reliable internet and phone connection.

Job Description

Location: Remote - Canada

About this role

Like WCG, you believe in the power of work. In this role, the Platform Engineering Manager leads the design and operation of WCG’s cloud platform as a product, enabling secure, scalable, and efficient delivery of digital services. You will drive the shift to a modern platform engineering model focused on automation, self-service capabilities, and developer experience, with primary ownership of Azure-based cloud infrastructure (with AWS exposure), IaC, DevOps/DevSecOps, identity and access management, and system integrations, ensuring integrations are scalable and reusable. Partnering closely with Security, Architecture, and Development teams, you will embed security by design, drive the adoption of AI-enabled platform capabilities to enhance engineering productivity, operational insights, and accelerate innovation across the organization.

What you'll do

  • Define, build, and operate the internal platform as a product, with clear users (developers, IT teams) and measurable outcomes
  • Develop and execute a platform roadmap, service catalog, and self-service capabilities (e.g., environment provisioning, templates, pipelines) including reusable components and standardized patterns
  • Continuously improve developer experience (DevEx) by reducing friction and increasing autonomy
  • Architect and manage cloud environments in Azure and AWS, including high availability, disaster recovery, and resilience strategies
  • Lead adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) (Terraform, Bicep, ARM)
  • Define scalable, secure, and cost-effective infrastructure patterns
  • Partner closely with Security teams to embed security into CI/CD pipelines and platform services
  • Implement automated security controls (SAST, DAST, dependency scanning, secrets management) and ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements
  • Enforce policy-as-code, least privilege access, zero-trust principles, and oversee identity and access management (including lifecycle, federation, and RBAC)
  • Leverage AI/ML for operational insights, anomaly detection, cost optimization, incident response, and engineering productivity
  • Establish and govern scalable, secure, and reusable integration patterns across systems (APIs, messaging, event-driven architecture)
  • Drive maturity of CI/CD pipelines and release automation
  • Enable fully automated provisioning and deployment workflows and reduce manual effort through automation
  • Implement observability practices (monitoring, logging, tracing, alerting) and support reliability targets (SLOs/SLAs, incident response, continuous improvement
  • Contribute to platform governance, standards, and alignment across security, architecture, and development teams
Qualifications

  • Systems thinking and scalability focus
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Seven (7) + years in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or platform engineering
  • Three (3) + years in leadership roles
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Azure; working knowledge of AWS
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, ARM)
  • Experience implementing DevSecOps practices and secure pipelines
  • Experience designing and managing integrations and APIs
  • Familiarity with AI tools and their application in engineering workflows
  • Experience with observability, monitoring, reliability engineering, and incident management practices
  • Strong understanding of identity and access management, including lifecycle and access control models
  • Experience working in Agile/DevOps environments

Preferred Criteria:

  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert / DevOps Engineer Expert
